Root [ROOT][OUDHS] Spirited Away: RCT Nerfer Edition :: 5/7/13 :: FULL TECHNICAL NOTES INSIDE

Hi All,
See if anyone has any advice for Rooting my Lucid 2. I've been getting the errors listed below, appears the file system is well locked up. And this is what i've done to attempt to correct it.... Got the MetroPCS drivers for the 870. I've went and followed the Unbrick/Unroot Lucid 2 walkthru and flashed the KDZ. And didn't even get stuck in a loop. But one thing that was different then any instructions I've seen, to factory reset the phone I was to hold down the down volume key and power on the device. This actually put my phone into safemode, never prompted to reset the device. But I did go and factory reset my phone under the menu anyway... but still getting the same result. FYI I did try to apply the root patch while in safe mode and got the same errors.

Thanks in advance for your support,

-M

Phone just tried to autodownload an update to something not from the PlayStore. Was unsure as to what it was so i turned off my data connection. Anyone else experiencing this?

*Edit* So i re-enabled the data went to software update, it found a new version and i selected reject. Suppose that might keep me safe for a bit?

wow a software update?.... I dont really want to know what will happen if i try updating from a rooted state. Does anyone know what the update does? does it actually address some of the phone's problems or does it just try to re-lock us out of the root?

Probably both, but you can downgrade with my unbrick guide.

sammyz, thanks for your assistance with this phone that i'm kicking myself for getting. I dont mind being a guinea pig for the software update impact on a currently rooted device if your fairly certain the unbrick guide will fix it. Unless you suggest unbrick first, thanks a ton.

Ok so ran the update and go an error 0x13E and then a wi nd ow giving error 402 when phone is done booting

After software update root method failed. I ran the phone with the update and noticed no other changes. So I downgraded and rerooted phone. Also dialer codes have never worked for me they send me directly to vzwsupport Or request an unlock code.

I tried this method, here is the log from the run bat file

It then says the exploit is complete. But it isnt. Any idea on y I am getting these messages ? Thanks in ADVANCE ! ! ! ! ! !

I have the same problem as whitemike, same firmware version, vs87011a.
Is there no root exploit for this version? Do I need to downgrade to an older firmware?

UPDATE: This exploit doesn't work on VS87011A. I downgraded to VS87010B and this was able to root it first try.

UPDATE 2: Thought I'd do a little experimenting... took OTA update to get back to VS87011A. Had replaced SuperUser with SuperSU (more reliable) and also installed Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and did an SU backup. Not sure if either was necessary, but I still have root on VS87011A. In the About it thinks root status is "Unrooted", but all my apps say otherwise.

Can you show me how to downgraded to VS87010B thanks

Yes, follow the instructions in this thread:
http://androidforums.com/lucid-2-all-things-root/703472-guide-unbrick-unroot-lucid-2-vs870-kdz.html

Be sure to check out my post in that thread if you have any trouble with detecting the phone in Download Mode.

Another thing I did not mention is after taking the OTA update to VS87011A, my phone would no longer lock. Pressing power just turned off the screen and pressing it again would just wake it up, but no slide to unlock screen. I ended up having to back everything up with Titanium Backup, do a full wipe, and restore. A full wipe did NOT unroot the phone, I only had to reinstall SuperSU. Now I have everything working 100%, and rooted, on VS87011A.

I did catch a reference in another thread of the possibility of something that could root VS87011A so you don't have to do the downgrade and re-upgrade, but I can't seem to find that thread.

I think they were talking about using motochopper, But since im already rooted on the old firmware, i would have to first factory reset/unroot, OTA update, then re-root. So it has not been worth it for me to try yet, but I think the thread that you are looking for is here: (see second post)

http://androidforums.com/lucid-2-all-things-root/749363-cwm-touch-recovery-lucid-2-a.html

Motochopper is floating around somewhere on the xda developers site.

Yep, that's it!
@richestd, be sure to try Motochopper first. Downgrading, rooting, and re-upgrading takes a lot of time. Then please come back and let us know if it worked for you.

I tried the Motochopper root first. When I check, it indicates that my phone is rooted but it shows supersu; no busy box or anything else. How do i get busy box? Thanks

BusyBox is on he play store, it should work as long as you have super user and you allow it.

no need ,lg root check can remove all root tools"(root browser, rootvalidator, frameroot) in safe mode
when the phone is shutdown ,vol down +power can go to "safe mode"
and vol up + power is clear you phone.
maybe safe mode can ota update?

Not sure what you're trying to say there, godmd5. In this thread, we want to root, not unroot. OTA update did NOT unroot my phone. Not sure if it just doesn't, or if OTA Rootkeeper made a difference.

So I rooted but then had to unroot later on and now the provision.apk force closes even if I want to purchase verizon wireless hotspot. Any suggestions?

Did it ever work in the first place?

This happens to me too. People say that if they already have a hotspot plan it won't crash and tethering will work...
Apparently this phone has something that blocks any hotspot attempt unless you have it in the first place. If we get a good ROM made though, we should in theory be able to tether for free with apps like foxfi or one of the 100s of other hotspot apps. Unfortunately, the community for this phone is really small, and I'm not one of the developers....

Here's an odd problem. I get through the batch script and it runs into the permissions denied error. But in download mode shows rooted. Even though su isn't there. I even tried flashing back to the stock firmware and I got the same issue after rerunning the script. Even tried manually following along and get hung up at kill and mount. Any thoughts?
