SaleenFiend...I'm sure the OP appreciates your offer to help, but the link you posted, as andygu3 correctly noted, is specific to the Sprint HTC EVO. It will not work on the Sprint HTC Hero.
Yea, fail on my part! Sorry dude! I just rooted a Hero last week though... use Z4root one click method. Worked flawlessly for me.
If Z4root does not work for you then you will have to Ruu to an earlier version and then root from there

Thanks to all who helped - (special props to Andygu3, Don B and MahaloCat) I now have a rooted phone and it is sweet! I had to return to 2.27... and then Universal Androot worked like a charm. (note: The Unlockr is a great site for this stuff too)

I now have CM6 (the "Final" version that was just posted the other day) on my Sprint Hero and I have 3 email accounts on it. I use email shortcuts for each one, but I don't get an "Inbox counter" on each one like I did when I had the stock version. (I have to look in the combined maibox) Checked everywhere in settings, etc - anybody have an idea?

If you use LP, then you can put them in your dock station and enable unread count in the LP preference

Great idea...Looks like you can only show Gmail unread count, at least as far as I can tell.
I went a different route - I took all 3 shortcuts and put them in the trash and then I moved the email icon from apps (it shows the combined mailbox and that has a counter for each account) and put it on my home screen. Now when I get an email I only have to touch one icon and I view all three accounts.
