Root [ROOT]Questions and Answers from the masses

found this on xda. downloaded to pc. Are there instructions on how to use it? What directory do I copy this to on my phone, etc. Sorry if this is obvious, the xda thread is 101 pages long and I was hoping for a simple set of instructions.

Also, 2 other questions. once done, how can i unroot if I don't want this and get back to stock.

Last, I am doing this to try to get back better battery life. Any suggestions if there are better roms for this and if so, how to install one.

Thanks for all the help.

Put the file on your SD card, find it with the file manger and install it. It will give you options to root/unroot.

As for ROM's, it depends on which phone you have. For a D2 I would say Liberty. For a D2G Fission.

installed. ran. been running 6 minutes, get little circle wheel spinning saying 'running exploit in order to obtain root access'.

everyone else said it worked in under a minute. something more i should do?

ok, now that i have root, how do i install this fission rom, and where do i find it? sorry for the novice questions, you can point me to a step by step, but haven't found a link for one.

That should have the step by step instructions. If you are not sure about any part of it, ask before you do it.

help? noob & just installed z4root. temp root or perm?? any downfall to just doing perm right away?

Just do permanent. No reason to use temp.

wow! after reading this forum for the past 2 hours, trying to make sure i don't miss a beat or a step - I just rooted and am now tethering and I feel soooooooooo empowered!!!! YAY!! you guys all ROCK on here!!!!!!!

Temp did not work for me for most 'root only' apps. It was very odd. Some 'root only' apps worked, some did not. I finally did the permanent root and ALL the 'root only' apps worked fine. You can always undo it.

The forums are VERY confusing. When I hacked our Wii, I found all the info in one spot on one forum with Sticky posts and FAQs for the noobs like me. I "softmodded" our Wii fairly quickly.

With the phones there are all sorts of forums and it seems you have to read them all to get an idea of what works and what doesn't.... and even then it might not work. I also find support for some apps to be lacking and they are market apps that want a donation! Go figure! Then there are the dead links and links that do not link to what they are supposed to. It is a real jungle with the Droid hacks.

I have run across this link several times as I have the Droid 2 Global and the only ROM I could use is Fission and it seems to be the best link for the Global out there... but I wish the link was more clear. I wish there were screen shots or more details about what I am doing and why.

for example, step 9 is "Optional: Now would be a good time to enable WiFi on your phone."

I can follow the directions like a monkey... but WHY? What does that do? Isn't 3G enough?

In the manual install is a section "wipe cache. Wipe data". What cache? What data? Why? What is A Delvick cache?

Screen shots would be good (but can you even get them during the process?)

And the Global ROMs seem to be gone. No explanation... just missing.

And why can I not just go to Fission Rom and reinstall the apps I want with Titanium Backup? OR will Titanium Backup's data be removed by the new ROM (I thought it was on the SD card). And what if the version of the app I installed with the ROM is different than the one in Titanium Backup...

OR... is the ROM going to leave all my apps intact? What is the ROM? Is it like the OS on a computer? Will installing it make it totally vanilla and remove my apps? Will the app data be there and recoverable with the new ROM or must I manually install all the apps again?

A good FAQ would answer most of the questions I have posted on here and other forums.

I got a replacement Droid 2 in the mail and I need to unroot my old one. I tried all night but all the walkthroughs I found seem a bit outdated. Any help would be great.

I need to do a little more than that, ey? I would need to get rid of bootstrap too, wouldn't I? I don't want to get charged for a new phone.

In other words, I need to go back to stock. I uninstall Bootstrap and unroot, then do a factory reset and superuser and bootstrapper remain in my applications. Could someone help me get this thing back?

I keep trying to follow the links I find and I keep getting stuck at broken links and contradictions. Does anybody have a current site I can get some sbf tools? I'm sorry, maybe that should have been my first question.

droid2lb, I too have a D2G and have been pondering rooting it. Did you successfully get yours to root? I am curious as most people seem to have a D2 or an R2D2 but not a global. I know they are very similar but there are some obvious differences. Hence my reluctance...

So, how did it work out for you?

Thanks,

I'm helping a friend to root his r2d2. I clicked on permanent so how long should it be getting root. It's been obtaining root accesses for about 4-5min. Is this normal.

Edit: we got it.

For anyone who reads this thread in the future: Z4Root and all the other root methods use the same exploit to get you root. It's not 100% Effective. Sometimes, z4root hangs. Just back out, restart your phone, and try again, this has worked for me, every time. Also, I know it's nonsensical (from a software POV), but if you restart your phone, then do run Z4root before you run anything else, it has worked 1st try 100% of the time for me (probably 4 of the 7 or 8 times I've SBFd)
