Root [ROOT]Questions and Answers from the masses

I did use the z4 root and it did hang but as stated by NiceGuysFinishLast a reboot and then another try and I was successful.

I just pulled it down from the site since it wasn't available in the market anymore.

Rooting in it's own changes nothing as far as one can tell, it's what you do with your new permissions that will have the impact. :-)

So far I have rooted with z4mod and I am currnetly running a titanium backup.

What do I use for the WiFi HotSpot to be enabled (the app that VZW charges $20/mo for)?

Is there a need for me to get a terminal program and go in and mess with the binaries on the OS or is there "an app for that"?

Basically just trying to do the most with the least tiny keyboard effort :-p

I use an APP for rooted phones called "Wireless Tether" It works good.
My son connects to my phone with his iTouch while we are driving down the road. Good stuff! He can access the net on the road. Just like having WiFi at home.
 
Hey everyone,

My brother wants the D2 Global for his birthday. I'm looking into getting it for him, but I'm not terribly familiar with the D2 or D2 Global models. I'm still an old school D1'er. I have plenty of experience with rooting and ROMing various phones so I'm not concerned about the nuances of the process, but I do have a few questions.

1. Does the root process for the regular D2 work on the D2 Global?

2. Does the Ninjablur or whatever kind of Moto UI is on there still have the problems I heard about at launch such as adding every single Facebook friend to the contacts? I know if I root it I can probably drop it, but I'd still like to know.

3. Is there an SBF for the D2 Global in case it needs to be reset completely? If not, is it possible by any other method above and beyond a factory reset / wipe?

4. Is the D2 Global really clocked 200mHz faster than the standard D2? Any other significant differences besides the obvious ability to use it overseas?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.
 
i have read through most of this forum and it seems to be very helpful..however i didnt see my question asked yet that i am aware of..

again i an a newb and dont fully understand all the rooting jargen and such.

i want to know now that i have rooted with z4root and installed gummy jar is it safe to update apps like i would normally? please any info would be great. thank you for your time
 
Yes if your Market says you have apps with updates, update them all you want and there is nothing to worry about
 
1. I don't know the root process for the D2, but probably. I use Z4Root. It's a one click root, with one touch unroot. It's a great little app.

2. I haven't synced a facebook account because this is still a problem. Doesn't bother me, I just go to m.facebook.com on my browser.

3. Yes. You can find it in the D2G Forum over at DroidForums.net. You'll have to do some googling to find a copy of RSDLite 4.9. You have to have 4.9 for hardware compatibility. You also need the latest drivers for your OS/Phone from Motorola.

4. Yes, it's 1.2GHz, but it's not just the same chip OCd, it's got a different processor. Significant difference: Battery life is lower. Many people complain, but if you get th extended battery ($50) and are smart about your phone, you can get 2 or 3 days of moderate use, or one day of constant use. Here's today's battery stats for me, on my stock BP6X battery. I normally use a BP7X, but I have a new one in the mail. (Protip, if you buy a BP7X, get the one for the R2D2, it comes with a white battery door. It's the same SKU as the regular one, with a W on the end, if your VZW rep can't find it).

Pretty not bad. But I also use the phone less than others, because I work 8-10 hours a day.
 
Thanks. That pretty much answers my questions. I didn't know about the processor difference. I assumed it was the same thing at a different clock. I'll have to let him know about the battery thing.

Can you explain what a ROM is and what makes a ROM so great?

The battery thing is only an issue to those who have unrealistic expectations, IMHO. This is a 1.2GHz processor with a touchscreen, running a cellular radio (or 2, or even 3 at a time!) or wifi, and possibly bluetooth. It's faster than the laptop I'm typing this on. You can't realistically expect two or three days of heavy usage out of something like this, like you could from your first greyscale nokia candybar phone. If you accept that you have to pay for the power, and get an extended battery, or a car charger, or a dock for your desk, or whatever, and take care with your apps (Watch how quickly things refresh, this can run your battery down QUICKLY), the phone is awesome. Especially once you root it, so you can run setcpu, titanium backup, autokiller (not necessary, but not harmful like advanced task killer), etc etc.

The Fission ROM is a vanilla looking ROM with almost no moto blur parts. Compared to the stock ROM its way smoother and faster. I noticed a difference immediately. There are other ROMs with other features, but Fission has been going on for around 4 months and in my opinion is the best and most stable.
 
i rooted just so i can remove some apps and then want to go back to unroot but i have this issue where i unroot i restart the phone and superuser is still there

anyone help me out?
 
I just backup with Koush's bootstrap and restore when needed. Gummy jar is nice, I've only tried Fission and Liberty.

if it works, it doesn't take more than a minute or two. You shouldn't need a battery pull, though. I just hit the home key, then used a task manager to kill it, then restarted my phone and did it again. Worked perfectly the next time.

Looked like a great ROM. The fact that it was causing FCs on certain apps since I was coming from Fission made me go back to Fission. I could SBF and install it, but Fission is the best ROM so far imo.

I've been flipping between stock->fusion->fission for the last two weeks. I can't decide how I feel about the lack of blurr (blasphemous I know) yet at the same time I think my battery is starting to go wonky anyways.

There are days where I'm happy running stock with the living daylights frozen out of it (via Titanium) and then there are times where I want to be running the leanest possible software (so I go to the ROM's).
