Root without recovery???

Is that where we are with this thing right now??? I don't really see much point in rooting if there is no recovery that would allow us to flash ROMs. Just wondering where we are so I can make the decision to root or not....although it seems fairly easy to root. Saying "easy to root" is kinda like saying a 3 foot putt is easy to make!!!!....:D:eek:;):p

Thanks in advance!!!!

Definitely worth it IMO.

It seems with every update the root exploit is patched, although the newest method might stick around for a while due to the exploit it utilizes, so you may not get the chance down the road and regret it.

Until the bootloader is unlocked, you're right in that we won't see recovery and custom kernels, but you can still overclock and remove all the bloat as it stands right now. Which makes a nice improvement performance wise.

If you're familiar with adb its about as straightforward as it gets.

Heh, I'm not familiar with adb at all other than reading through some of the threads here and elsewhere yesterday. I think I may just wait for the bootloader to be unlocked. I'm not unhappy with my Prime as it stands now. Of course since I started with an Adam, my tolerance for sub par ROMS is pretty high. :D

ADB, is actually very simple, I think people get overwhelmed by not fully understanding the commands, but if you have an older device you're no longer using, play around with some commands.

If you ever get into trouble, which is bound to happen to everyone at some point or another, having basic adb knowledge can save a ton of heartache.

Also, with ViperBoy's PrimeTime, its essentially a one-click operation. Install the drivers, run the program and let it do its thing.

I found this tutorial very simple and straightforward. They even updated it very recently and I know there are more advanced functions to use in ADB, but for basics, thought it was very helpful to at least get the drivers properly loaded and get the 1st feel for using ADB.

After learning a basic, then I used the Honeycomb instructions from XDA user rsarno which includes the commands to install his exploit to root and keep root when upgrading to ICS.

[ROOT] NachoRoot - Honeycomb - xda-developers

or this is the same thing with less "clutter"

I'm with you flyjbaker. I'm not seeing a huge positive with rooting this tablet right now. There's not a lot of bloatware on this device and not having a working recovery or an unlocked bootloader, I'm staying stock for now.

I am looking to get one in a couple weeks......BUT, what fun is it going to be without being able to theme the darn thing because there are no custom roms and custom recovery for it yet? :)

Hope to see something going towards that soon. Definitely like the possibilities with this machine.

It does look like Asus will give the availability to unlock the bootloader soon, so I'm sure roms and recoveries will come shortly after. Like with any device, it's all with the developer support

Xtreme, we are enjoying our Prime:D Just don't plan on using the device as a gps navigational unit. As of right now, it's not working all that great;)

There are several reasons to root this device. I'll lay them out for you.... Remember there will be many more reasons...i'm just putting why ive rooted mine....

Why root:
1. Change bootanimation
2. you'll be ready when roms and kernels are released
3. you'll be able to install a recovery, so you'll have more control of your device, so if anything EVER happens you can make a backup and restore it
4. You can overlock to 1.5ghz or 1.6ghz (stock is 1.3ghz)
5. Very coop apps like Ram Manager or Task Control need root
6. You can install Ubuntu/Backtrack and actually use Ubuntu (currently only chroot)
7. You can install mods like change the icons ect. (not adviseable until we get a recovery)
8. If you ever wanted to sell your prime, the fact that its rooted (or hacked) it would be more valuable)
9. If you like to use your phone as internet, you need root to currently get ad-hoc to work on ics
10. so many more

Okay, this is my rebuttal just for rebuttals sake...haha.
1. I never understood this one. I booted my Prime right out of the box 3 weeks ago and have not booted since. Even so, if I did reboot a lot this is something that lasts about 7 seconds. So you go thru the time and trouble(and risk) of changing this for no real gain.

2.They haven't been and you will need a custom recovery anyway.

3.Again, hasn't happened yet

4.Cool!...although I have never seen this thing struggle on the power...this is like a car person holding up a dyno sheet although no real performance was realized.

5.I wouldn't call those "cool apps"...:)

6. I am not that good!...;)

7.No recovery

8. Eeeehhh. Believe it or not, most people are not geeks And a non-geek would likely consider a rooted device "compromised" or "tainted"...very much like a heavily modified car. Only an educated car person would buy a heavily modded car. So I disagree here.

9. I have a rooted Evo 3D. My Prime tethers to it no problem.

10.OK

There...just to be argumentative!!!....;) Seriously, just messin around!
