Root root without rom yet?

I'm glad to hear it worked.:D Max CPU is different for every phone, it's really about adjusting it until you find that sweet spot.

thanks. it definitely makes a difference. wow. now, how can i delete some of those apps i don't want? peeps, stocks, browser, senseui, etc.?

I think technically you CAN enable root access and overclocking without touching your data. You could flash engtools.zip (courtesy of jcase), which just adds su and Superuser.apk to your existing stock rom, and then flash Zanfur's overclock kernel (available on XDA).

There's not really a need to wipe your phone and flash a whole new ROM after rooting with the new method. We had to do that with the original root method because a crummy test ROM from HTC was installed by default.

thenestor, with this approach would the looming, new OTA "fix" cause the loss of root? (or maybe cant know that until it arrives).

I did successfully do this today

^ still running ok? How's battery life? This has got me interested.

well worth it. with all the root apps you can get that work deeper and better, battery life is the same. it was(well, is now) simple and no data or anything was lost..now i can have titanium backup and and all the good apps....

So, you're running stock 2.1 with sense ui, but with root and OC?

I did this last night.

Took me 4 hours to figure it out lol.

I flashed engtools3.zip and the OC Kernal patch. I am running set cpu at 806/528 and it's pretty stable.

I gues my question is, when I look in HBOOT I'm still 147.0000 with S-ON. I know I have SU and all that jazz, I just figured that the "S" needed to be off to have root/SU. If I flashed a custom ROM would the S then be off? Can I just flash a custom rom now from the Recovery Screen?

Thanks for all of the help. This is the deepest I've ever jumped in to the techie side of modding. Flashing other carrier versions of BlackBerry software just isn't the same I guess. lol

i typed up a quick tutorial here cuz it took me 4 hours probably too. its only cuz its scattered. but if you had to do it again i bet it would only take 15 min. right? and to NKT, yeah, its beautiful.

nestor added the cincher here somewhere though. so there are somewhere around 5 people that deserve credit....i'm gonna try to push mine to 806 and see. im at 787

Yes you will have to worry about OTAs. Although with root explorer you can change the otacert zip file to .zip.bak and that will disable OTA's I just can't remember right now the exact name and location of the file.

That is 100% the truth. Once I gathered all the bits and pieces it was a snap. I feel comfortable changing roms but I want to do some more reading and try to pick one.

I can't go back to my original stock 2.1 ota, right? I did a nandroid backup.

yes. you can go back with your backup. titanium backup will too. you can also get root explorer to remove sense stuff, but look into that. that way you might not want a new rom, although most streamline things a lot. but you always have your backup

also, download quick boot. easy way to get into recovery mode, etc.

v941726, as far as the overclocking stuff, exactly what files are needed from the XDA site? Do you flash the engtools and OC like you would a custom rom? Thanks.

yes. if you look in previous posts in this thread(very beginning) you will see a thread that directs you to xda. but the directions are also posted. instead of flashing a rom, flash the engtools(rename to update.zip) and the oc kernel (again rename to update.zip). before all this you will be able to do a nand backup. thats how you will get your phone back to its prior state. then use setcpu to overclock. its free if your an xda member.

So since I did the back up, I can go back to factory even if I flash a custom rom by just restoring my backup?

And if I use something like my back up pro I could go back to my same personalized state?

Edit: why would I want to change my hboot?
