Root root without rom yet?

I think technically you CAN enable root access and overclocking without touching your data. You could flash engtools.zip (courtesy of jcase), which just adds su and Superuser.apk to your existing stock rom, and then flash Zanfur's overclock kernel (available on XDA).

There's not really a need to wipe your phone and flash a whole new ROM after rooting with the new method. We had to do that with the original root method because a crummy test ROM from HTC was installed by default.

Thanks nestor!

So to continue with this, if we flash the proper kernel, we can have the capabilities of LWP/apps2sd/wireless tether/overclocking right? Like some of us have already done with overclocking?

Ok so I'm rooted are you guys saying I can over clock without a rom loaded.

Yes. You just need to flash Zanfur's OC kernel (found on the XDA site). Then get the SetCPU app (also on XDA) and your all set. Have you already flashed engtools?

Guys,

For those that have actually "rooted without ROM", would you mind looking at this post I made yesterday: http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/132652-rooting-question.html#post1229966

Wasn't intending to create a new thread or anything, just wanting to help Peter and co. out a bit. Would appreciate any review, feedback, etc., especially for those that have actually done this to make sure the instructions are correct. Figured those that have done this would know best :).

Thanks.

It's easier to flash a ROM. I went with Frisco's choice of xtr. Can't remember if he's on Sense or Vanilla. I'm on xtrSense3.1. It's faster than overclocked leak 3. It wouldn't start until I did a factory reset.

MyBackup Pro worked better for me than Titanium Backup. Ymmv.

v941726,

I am very interested in doing this to my phone, but I am still confused on what instructions a actually start with. Could you guide me in the right direction?

Thanks

Anyone have an idea on a2sd without flashing a custom rom?

I don't know why you would do that. xtrSense is way faster than rooted leak 3 and comes with a2sd. I think you would have to reinstall your apps either way so you might as well put a new ROM on at the same time.

Hope this thread is still alive because i have a question.
I just rooted my Eris and have stock 2.1 by using the Universal 1 click apk by jcase (which worked great , thx) and i dont want to loose any of my settings or programs and would like to keep it the way it is.
But, i do want to over clock it, if i understand correctly, by rooting my phone with the Universal 1 click, i have amons recovery installed. Am i not correct?
If so, can i just flash the overclock kernal or do i still have to flash engtools, and then the overclock kernal?

I also read somewhere on this forum that i have to back up my files to restore back to normal? Or will my files be intact after flasing the overclock kernal.

Thanks

If you used the Universal 1 Click app correctly, then Yes - you should have Amon_RA's recovery installed.

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE PROCEEDING FURTHER. ALWAYS!. (Have a look at this "Finishing Up" post for lots of details and pictures showing you how to use Amon_RA if you are not already familiar with it.). Don't misinterpret what a backup is for, though: it doesn't just save your settings and data, it SAVES ESSENTIALLY EVERYTHING (not the SD card). If you were to restore it, it restores the phone to the same state it was in when you made the backup... including the old kernel.

The reason for making backups is so you have something to go back to in case you make a mess of things.

Yes, you can "slip a kernel" underneath an existing ROM. Not sure whether you should be choosing V8 or V9.

I think that the "rootme.zip" file from the original instructions provides the same functionality as the "engtools.zip" stuff, but I am unsure of that (and don't know if there are version differences even if they are the same basic tools - "su" and "Superuser.apk"). But you will need one or the other, in addition to SetCPU (or Conap's CPUBoost).
