I have my phone rooted and i also received the update yesterday as well... i hit 'install and reboot' but as others were saying the update froze and i havent gotten the noticed again... can someone tell me if installing a new rom (like the one sdrawkcab25 posted) erases everything? apps, app settings/data/info, text messages, contacts, accounts ect.? I have only changed my kernel before but never the rom.. so i dont know if it erases everything like that. Also i have made a nandroid backup as well as a titanium backup but i have never used "restore" on none of them so i dont really know to what extent it restores your stuff.. and i dont really want to lose my text messages and everything..

I've never had a problem of any kind with that rom. Probably helps that I wipe all data/cache before loading though. I think many of the problems with disappearing apps were becasue the OTA updates without a wipe.
What features(if any) are lost by giving up stock roms? can you still use the store and purchase from it?
You can download and install a Stock (rooted) ROM. It is the exact same software, only with root.
And the only thing you really give up going to the modified/3rd-party rom is the verizon specific add-ons (vcast store, v-navigator, etc). Almost nobody actually uses those.

I finished installing the rom linked above a few hours ago(my first time doing that) and can say that you won't notice any derogatory issues that everyone new to it fears. I worried about the phone not being recognized as mine by verizon, not being able to use the store, etc. When it booted, it was no different than when I purchased the phone and turned it on for the first time. Android walked me through the startup, allowed me to sign into my google account and spit me out at the same desktop I've come to know and love.
I didn't even use Titanium to backup my apps as I was looking forward to having a clean start. I backed up my texts through Handcent, exported my phone and google contacts through the contact settings and wiped/installed.
The only thing I haven't finished is cleaning up the SD card to reclaim the space lost by the data stored there by apps that no longer exist. Once I'm done with that, I'll just enjoy rooted 2.3.4.

Do I need Nandroid or similar before trying the ROM on the xda site? I just made a backup with titanium and will copy it to the computer.
It also says they removed the amazon mp3... I actually use that as an mp3 player and don't want to lose it... Can I restore it?

Just got word of the final update...4.08.605.2. The new, and final number to block the update using the build.prop method is 222219. This should be the final update this phone will ever see so no more editing necessary from here on out.
So the whole string is

Unless I'm mistaken, the ROM you pointed us to has the update check removed, so anyone that flashed his ROM doesn't have to worry about the nag, correct?

Go for it. For me, rooting was a much tougher process than flashing a new ROM. I was adding apps back within 10 minutes of starting the backup process and 7 minutes of that was the initial bootup

One quick question regarding the xda rom listed here and charging...
My screen stays on barely when I turn the phone off. In a dark room it is noticeable... this is new and always turned fully off before when I ran the 2.2 ROM (I installed the new one last night).
Is there an easy fix to get the screen to turn fully off when I power down the phone? I don't want to get too heavy into the programming side... but if it is just changing a few lines, I am willing to try.
This isn't that big of a deal either.

I'm waiting for the 4.08 software to come out with Stock+ then I will definitely take the jump.
