Root Rooted 2.2 to Gingerbread

Hi all - Sorry I have a feeling this questioned has been asked many times, but I'm finding conflicting answers.

I have a stock ROOTED 2.2 that I want to upgrade to Gingerbread. What is the "correct" process for getting this upgraded?

with rooted phones to get the upgrade all you have to do is just flash a rom that has the update. here is the current rooted ota sock rom:[ROM][STOCK] 4.24.651.1 - Odexed & De-Odexed - xda-developers download and flash the odexed version to keep as stock as possible. however, there are a ton of cool roms that have sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 which our evos will never get. we are stuck officially with sense 1.0. these roms are pretty stock looking but the have some cool features that are pasrt of the 2.1 and 3.0 sense. try synergy, mikg2.2,kings alliance 7.6, or even virus's kingdom rom. you can get them on the rom/kernel sticky.

What will I lose by doing this? Ideally I'd like to save my programs, text message threads, etc. I can rebuild some stuff, but call history and text messages are important.

what rom are you on? if you are on the rooted stock 2.2 rom then all you would have to do is wipe dalvik cache and cache and flash the 2.3.3 rom. however, if you are on a custom rom then you will have to wipe dalvik cache, cache and, data.factory reset which will wipe your data and apps. so use titanium backup to backup your apps and its data (never restore system data as that will conflict with your current rom). some message apps have the ability to move the messages to the sd card. and your contacts should be under google and not phone. if they are under google then all you have to do is sign in to google and it will import all of your contacts.

As noted I'm on factory ROM. Do you know the applications that will save text messages and call history?

Thanks for the help!!

i believe handcent can as well as the stock messaging app. as far as call logs go that i'm not sure of. i never really backed those up. but if you just wipe dalvik cache and cache and flash the rom, you will not loose any of that.

nice glad we got you updated. now i would really suggest you try some of these new roms coming out. try mikg2.2 or kings alliance 7.6. both are great sense 2.1+3.0 roms. super smooth and just plain awesome!! they should really have been out gingerbread ota instead of the vanilla rom they pushed onto us. you can get them in the rom/kernel sticky at the top of this forum.

What if you are running a netarchy kernel? Do you have to flash the new 2.3 stock kernel and update your radios when flashing a 2.3 ROM from 2.2, or just the kernel?

I am currently running Azrael 4.0 with the netarchy more HAVS nosbc kernel and would like to update to the Synergy ROM.

well unfortunately, there is only the gingerbread stock kernel that we have now for 2.3.3 roms. every rom will come with a stock kernel so really when you want to upgrade you can just flash the rom. you do not even have to upgrade your radios if you do not want to. azereal has a gingerbread rom if you want to try it out. check the rom/kernel sticky for it.

Is there a downside to not flashing the new radios?

EDIT: And as much as I like Azrael, the developer has went and upgraded to an Evo 3d so his 2.3 Rom will be a one shot deal with no updates or support.

well the only downside is that you could loose your wimax keys for good. once they are gone, they are gone. but if you have backed them up and saved to your computer you are good to go. read this before you do though;http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html. do not let all the red warnings signs scare you. yes it could happen, but like i said if you have them backed up you are good to go.
