Root Rooted and stuck in white screen

blynch89

Newbie
I know that there is a couple threads on this already but I know nothing when it comes to this stuff. This is my situation...

I bought a rooted phone and it wont get past the white htc evo4g screen. I don't know what is installed on the phone or anythign like that. I was hoping that someone could help me out with this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First and foremost Welcome to the forum blynch! What I need you to do is power off then back on while holding volume down (this will get you to hboot). Let your Evo scan for a PC36IMG (which it won't have one), then navigate down to the recovery option using the volume keys and power to select. Once in "recovery" I want you to wipe cache and dalvik cache, if using Clockworkmod it should be under the "advanced" menu I believe.

I understand that this might be chinese to you but we're here to help and will get you through this.

Also, is there any chance of speaking w/ the person who sold you the Evo and asking them which ROM they're running and what recovery they have?

I have been talking to the guy who sold it to me and this is our convo. I havent done the "For when you wake up:" part yet. But i did the rest.

For when you wake up:
Assuming you waited around 5-10 minutes after flashing the phone and it didn't boot up, the next option likely will be to try to do a complete factory back to stock wipe. That is what we pretty much did with the last flash you did, but you can also load the S-ON file that locks the bootloader back up. There is a really good write up of the process and all the files for download here:

Let me know your thoughts. I would also be happy to take the phone back to fix or as a return. I hope it doesn't come to that, but the option is there. Thanks for working on this.

Dear Jon,

Ok, I did that. After i did that i followed the same steps from the message before and it didnt help. I am still stuck on that same screen. i have to get to bed now, i have to be up early for work. i will check back here in the morning for your reply, and i will check here frequently tomorrow.

Dear blynch89,

I am uploading another file for you and you will load it the exact same way. However, this one is much bigger as it is a full build and will also unroot the phone. The root isn't what is causing the problem, but I figure we might as well take it off in an update. download the file and you will need to rename it from PC36IMG-1.zip to PC36IMG.zip. I had to add the -1 since my FTP server already had the other file of the same name on it. You will either need to overwrite the last file on the phone with this one or delete the other one before copying this over.

Dear jon,

That didn't work. It's still stuck on that white screen.

Dear blynch89,

OK, cool. Go to
https://connex.manh.com/uploads/PC36IMG.zip

You will download the zip file. Plug your device into your computer using the USB cable. On the device in RA recovery, select USB toggle or something like that. With the device plugged in and the toggle on, it should then connect to your computer via USB. You should then see the SD card of the device as a disk drive on your computer. Copy the PC36MG.zip file to that drive (it needs to be in the root of that drive and not in a folder). Once it is copied over, press the power button to turn off USB toggle. Then highlight wipe and press power. In that menu select factory reset or something like that. It should be the first option. You will have to confirm with the power button. You then will want to go back to the main screen. If there is a Power Off option, choose that. If not, pop the battery to turn it off.

You will now boot back into Hboot like you did with the directions from my last email. This time, however, it will find a file and ask you if you want to Start Update. When asked, press the up button to say Yes. This should update your radio and take a little bit of time. Follow the directions on the screen and I believe when it is done, it should reboot. Hopefully, all should be good. If not, let me know and I may want you to call me. Sorry for all this trouble.

Let me know if eventually you want the files and directions to unroot and lock the boot loader. I am hesitant to have you do that because if there are any problems, you have less options to fix them with the phone locked.

Dear jon,

On the bottom of the screen it says - Build : RA-supersonic-v2.3

Dear blynch89,

Can you tell me what recovery is on the device? With the phone powered off, hold the volume down button and the power button for about 5 seconds. You can let go of the power button, but hold onto the volume down button until the white hboot screen comes up. It will search for some files in the root directory of the phone which will take a little time. After that happens, you can scroll through the menu using the volume keys. Highlight Recovery and press the Power button. It will then reboot into either Clockwork recovery or Amon Ra recovery. Clockwork Recovery will say at the top of the screen that it is clockwork. Since I don't have an Evo in front of me, I can't remember if Amon Ra says Amon Ra on the top or not.

ok so go into recovery so which recovery do you have now? also when in recovery try and wipe dlavik cache and cache. how long are you waiting for it to boot up from the white htc splash screen? it should take up to 15 minute sometimes as it has to build up dalvik cache.

i think i have the Amon Ra recovery. When i go to the recovery screen on the bottom it says..

Build : RA-supersonic-v2.3

I have waited 20 min before and nothing happened. Going to try what you just suggested to me right now

thanks for the help btw

ok so lets try this, lets flash a rom. try this one:MikG-v2.2-signed.zip it is mikg2.2 which is a very nice stock looking rom that has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in.

also download this file: ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. this is the superwipe file that does just what the name says. it just wipes really well.

1.download both files and transfer them to the sd card
2.go into recovery and wipe dalvik cache, cache, and system do that 3x
3.next select install from sd card and select the superwipe file.
4.afterwards flash the rom
5.reboot

now the first boot should take longer then normal. however it should not be more then 15 min or so. but let it do its thing. hopefully that should get you booted up.

I am downloading the stuff now. I will follow your steps and let you know what happens.

Thank you again

What do you mean by flash the rom? i ran the superwipe file and it says it is complete. should i now install the other file?

Sorry for all the questions.

if you're still online, yes, flash the rom that you downloaded. return to the main screen of your recovery, choose flash zip from sdcard. choose zip from sdcard. highlight your rom and hit power. it will then install. afterwards, return to main screen and reboot system.

give us your thoughts on that rom. i really like it. plus you get sense 2.1 with some 3.0 in there as well. unrooted evos only have sense 1.0, be glad you are rooted. lol

im not sure what rooted means or what i am capable of doing because of it. The phone works great so far, its very smooth. What makes the ROM you gave me good?

well for me the one thing that i like is that this rom comes with the sense 3.0 camera. it has panorama which is sweeet. it has the best battery life thanx to some tweaks that mik has done to this rom. plus you have the hotspot unlocked. it is just a good solid rom.

if you want there other great roms out that you can try as well. there is the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html sticky where you can go to check out some roms out. just want to let you know to be careful. flashing roms can be addicting. i'm a flashaholic and there is no cure.

I also am a newfound Mik head. I use the aforementioned 2.2 Rom and I love it!
What you get that stock evos don't have is the ring lockscreen with the quick launch. The sense 3.0 messaging app, the new personalization menu, you can apply skins and download new ones, the list goes on.
Plus Mik is an optimizing genius, his roms are always FAST! I haven't had any force closes since I've loaded up this Rom.
You've been assimilated, welcome to FA. (flashaholics anonymous) :D

This ROM is really good, if you have to help anyone again with a similar problem definitely tell them to use this. Its really cool

Mik does an outstanding job on his roms. I would read through the Rooting for Dummies guide and familiarize yourself with the different things that you can do and how to do them. If you are like the rest of us, you will get the flashing bug when something new comes out. I think most of use flash a different rom a couple times a week to see what is new. Just remember when you get the bug and want to try out something new, nandroid backups are your friend. In the event something goes wrong or you don't like what you flashed, you can simply wipe(my preference) and restore the nandroid to get back where you were. If you haven't already, once you get your phone set up the way you want it go to recovery and backup your phone. Make sure to select Wimax for at least one backup to save your 4g keys. Not sure on Mik but you will want to backup android_secure and/or sdext also.
