Root Rooted but wont install custom ROMS???

Hi i am new to this, so any help will be appreciated.

I have a htc desire locked to the THREE network.
I rooted it using Unrevoked and have also made a gold card as i thought this might solve my problem of not being able to install custom roms.
I have superuser access and can installed apps that require root.
But when it comes to install from .zip in recovery it always fails and error message 7 writing the boot.img.

Few Specs:
android 2.2
hboot 0.93 s-on

Have a feeling is something simple, or at least i hope it is.

...and you've tried this with several zips? Which?

Take a nandroid backup. Does it let you restore that backup? Test it please as that writes/restores boot.img.

If it does, you can try formating boot via clockwork recovery mounts and storage menu, but if you then cant flash OR restore, you'll have to use an RUU to return to stock, so its risky

I have tried it with leedroud.zips and there were a couple others i cant remember the name of. No it doesnt seem to complete the nandroid backup as it doesnt write the boot.img.

Hang on. Did you check if your device is PVT4? Erase size 40,000?

Please download terminal emulator from the market. open it and type

cat /proc/mtd

Press enter and tell me if it says 20,000 or 40,000

You're going to have to re-run unrevoked using Amon RA recovery as Clockwork doesnt work with 40,000. Running unrevoked means you will have to clear cache on teh superuser app afterwards too.

From the FAQ in my signature:

If it IS 40,000 you need to use the latest Amon-RA recovery image (rather than the standard supplied) with unrevoked when rooting. Use Unrevoked 3.21 if you can.

You can get it here:
[Recovery] [14-Nov-2010] RA-desire-v2.0.0 [GSM] - xda-developers However, 2.0.1 is deemed to be better (Thanks @Rastaman-FB). This is a test image, available HERE

When using unrEVOked, whilst it is on the "Waiting for device" screen, go to FILE > Custom recovery - Choose the Amon-RA image you downloaded.

aww thank you that is a great help and help i doubt i would have got else where and shall down load all of the stuff now ready for me to do tomorrow, thank you

did you use 3.21? If so maybe you have to try a newer one. If not, you didnt change the install location did you? to SD card? if you did you have to turn this back.

You dont HAVE to. Its just better. It all depends on what is causing the "is your software version too new?" error.

Sorry have just got in from work, well i used the newer version of unrevoked but cant find the 3.21 version and have looked everywheere.

as i do get the error that the firmware is too new.

wish this was easier haha

you have been really helpful

Is the recovery image called "recovery.img"?

If not, try again like that. If thats fails, may be best to either s-off or downgrade/ruu and start again.
