I have a rooted Evo with Unrevoked 3 and recently did a software update, but had to do it manually with the update zip file straight from my micro sd card.

Can anyone give any feedback to why the teather is not working? Am i properly rooted?

Have you tried clearing cache and dalvik from recovery then rebooting and trying wireless tether again?

Do you have the superuser icon??? If so, you're properly rooted. Which wireless tether paks have you tried??? Maybe uninstall, then reinstall? android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code # 9 and # 11 always seemed to work for me.

Speaking of the superuser app, open it up and make sure wireless tether is on the whitelist. Did you ever get a prompt to grant it permissions when you first tried to start it?

First of all, I really appreciate your input. Well i accidently deleted everything on my phone i from the off position i booted my phone with the volume down into HBOOT.

I then clicked on clear storage thinking that is what you guys meant by clearing the cache and dalvik. before i reinstaled by backup i realized i was still rooted. I do have superuser, but wireless theather is NOT on the list, nor did it ask to be on there, when i launched wireless teather from a new download.

Would love instruction on how to clear the cache and dalvik and any other suggestions you may have..

thank you again!

On the wireless teather it said instaling binaries and stuff. then i clicke start teathering and that is what i got the message unable to teather. i believe in the past it asked for superuser permission, but im not getting that.

i really dont have any other root only apps. I'm sorry but you did loose me on the instructions from a terminal.
ps. when i HBOOT and try to go into recovery mode it give me a red yield sign and the phone locks up.

Can you run other root only apps? From a terminal, type su and make sure your prompt changes to #.

I rooted my brothers phone the other day, and a friends, and both times I got the error message after the triumph message.

S was still on, but before I rebooted to find out I opened terminal emulator and tried su and got the # prompt. On my brothers phone I thought e succeeded. I realized later with my friends phone that we had not.

The su command will return a # prompt even with s-on apparently. I guess it just means you're half way there.

It was the problems with the apps that made me realize that we had failed.

1. Download terminal emulator from the market
2. Start it up
3. type in "su"

Let us know what prompt returns... it should be # instead of $ which is what you start with.

Yeah, there's a been a problem with unrevoked lately where it can't flash unrevoked forever (which is a part of unrevoked3) giving you soft root only. To get full root, download and flash unrevoked forever manually, and you'll have full root.

I follwed the steps you told me to follow and i got a "Permission denied" prompt

Quick question...I seem to be getting in deeper. Why do i get a RED yield sign and my phone locks up while trying to get into recovery mode?

Are you sure that update zip was a rooted rom? If you get permission denied when you type su, you are not rooted.

No...im not sure it was a rooted update.. so now I don't have a recovery image. I probably installed the wrong update, but my phone does state that the S-off. Any suggestions to getting out if this mess.

Well, normally, you can flash a new recovery with rom manager, but that probably won't work without a rooted rom. You do have s-off, though, which is technically all you need. So, the first thing you need to do is get a working recovery image.

Here's the link to RA recovery:

[Recovery] [28-August-2010] RA-evo-v1.8.0 - xda-developers

Read the post for instructions on how to install via fastboot. I suppose you could use clockwork too, if you want. I think you can install it the same way. Once you have a working recovery image, you can flash whatever you want, including a rooted rom. You'll want to do a nandroid backup, first, of course.

I suppose another option is to rerun unrevoked3. Regardless of your s-off state, it could probably get your rom re-rooted and get you a working recovery image (it will be clockwork).

I tried running un revoked 3 but it just stalls on the image recovery and won't finish. I will try the xdadevelopers way and see if I have any luck.

Try a second time. When I rooted my friends phone the first time a few days ago I got the same message but got the # prompt when I tried again. I don't know what I did wrong but it worked the second time. In our case s was still on though.

I think you will get the correct prompt if you're careful and try again.
