Root Rooted, still on very early bootloader, coverage awful, need suggestions

I am S-Off. I already flashed the su file... to be honest, I was wondering why one option is to flash the su and another is to load a custom rom in the rooting for dummies guide, but I was going to save that question for later.

Are you saying there's some reason I'd need to go through your scenario and accept the OTA update? I was under the impression that once I've rooted and obtained S-Off, I never needed to do an OTA update again. All I'm trying to do is get the latest radios which will help me decide whether to stick with Sprint or jump to AT&T.

ok sorry i could have sworn that i saw in one of your earlier posts that you were s-on. sorry i forgot that you are s-off now.

so the software version 3.15.651.16 has the radio of 1.12.11.1119 which is what you have. your actual software version will not change unless you flash a rom. when you update your phone, you are mainly concerned with firmware. so you are good to go there.

but you are not current. you want the 3.15.651.3 version with the radio of 1.12.11.1210.

i hope that makes sense.

ok so in order to be fully rooted you need superuser installed into your phone. without it you can't use root base apps. you will not be allowed to change your system partition (like removing bloatware). so you have to either install su if you planned on staying on stock(not sure why as there are waaaaaaaay better roms then stock) or you can flash a custom rom as they all have su cooked in.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense, and I assumed that you had read the initial post wrong... But I still have no idea what I'm doing so I'm not assuming anything here :)

I guess I had assumed (there I go again) that my radio wasn't updating at all, but it sounds like I'm now just one rev back. The reason I didn't go with the latest 3.15.651.3 was that I was nervous about the touchscreen issue. Now that I know my update was successful, I'll look into getting one of the latest ROMs first, research it a bit more to make sure I won't lose my touchscreen, and then upgrade the firmware to 3.15.651.3.

Thanks for all the help!

The firmware package that Cap'n put up, doesn't have the touchscreen stuffs in it. Check the firmware page and it lists what each package has. :)

so the 3.16.651.3 JellyBean OTA - LATEST does not have the tp added to it so you should have no issues updating to it.

here is what captain says about the latest firmware:
Captain_Throwback said:
Includes Radio 1.12.11.1210, PRI 2.97_003 & a few other smaller updates.
NOT INCLUDED IN ZIP: HBOOT.img, recovery.img (stock), boot.img & tp_SYN3202.img*

*tp_SYN3202.img is touch panel firmware, which affects interaction with the touch screen. This latest firmware is ONLY compatible with ROMs that use the 3.16.651.3 boot.img/kernel, and TWRP Recovery version 2.4.1.0 or newer. If you plan on using an older base ROM, an AOSP ROM, or older version of recovery, then you should NOT install the below standalone file (as it will cause your touch screen to be unresponsive). However if you would like to run a 3.16-base ROM for a while to test it out and then go back to AOSP or the old base, you can downgrade to the 3.15.651.16 tp firmware from that section below PRIOR to changing to a different (non-3.16-base) ROM.

you can use the tp_SYN3202 tp firmware if you want, but you will only be able to use the 3.16.651.3 sense roms and no aosp roms. however, capt also has an older tp file that you can downgrade if you change your mind.

so i would go ahead and get your phone updated to the lates firmware.
