Root rooting and OTA

On my old Moto Droid, I know that some of the Custom ROMs made it so the phone would not receive the OTA's,
If I root my Inc. (but dont load a ROM), will I still be able to get the OTA when it comes out (I assume I will lose my root)?
I only want root to access wifi tethering.... if the 2.2 update still has the tethering then I would like to update to it, if VZ removes it then I plan on loading custom ROMs...
