Root Rooting android 2.3.3

Hello. Has anyone managed to root gingerbread 2.3.3 yet?

I installed RUU_HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade (Gingerbread).exe
But its not rooted.

Thanks in advance.

It can't be rooted after flashing it yet. There are rooted versions around though, but too late in this case.

It's being worked on though

Trouble is, that person is using a Droid X (a US Motorola handset), so they are not talking about the same Gingerbread update.

I'm stuck at this official GB-update as well. Nice to read it's being worked on. I know it's irritating asking when it will be done, but do you know who's working on it and if they make any progress?

Bit worried here because I know anyone can flash 2.3 on a rooted Froyo, so there isn't much need to look for an exploit. Feel very stupid using the RUU.

As far as I know, its a joint venture between alpharev and unrevoked called "revolutionary"

It's not quite so simple. The utility requires root to work, so I programmed it to obtain temp root if the phone isn't rooted. That root exploit was fixed in Gingerbread though, so the utility fails as things stand. If the phone already has temp root, it will probably work.

Two things need to be tested:

Does the Gingerbread temp root exploit work on HTC's official release?

Does the new hboot release allow downgrades like earlier versions?

If the answer is yes to both, a new downgrade tool would be easy to write. Otherwise the only possibility is to get S-OFF support.

I'm afraid the answer to both is no but if I can help by testing things please let me know how. I already tried flashing an earlier Froyo-RUU but no luck. Guys from revolutionary told me that the Gingerbread-exploit is patched in this release.

It isn't the same as trying to flash an RUU. But without root, it's impossible to downgrade by my method.

Well, download and install Visionary+ and see if it gives temproot. If it does, as teppic says, it's worth seeing if his tool can exec rageagainstthecage

rageagainstthecase is a temp root exploit (which doesn't work in Gingerbread), it's got nothing directly to do with downgrading.

Incidentally, is it known yet if anyone has tested the various temp root methods - gingerbreak, psneuter, etc on the new ROM?

I've yet to see any evidence that there's a problem with the new hboot. alpharev/unrevoked3 failing is not evidence of this.

I've found the modaco post where he claims he got temp root (via Gingerbreak) but he's essentially withdrawn that claim. A few people have tried it and it doesn't work. I believe this is the exploit that alpharev is relying on.

Ive seen posts eluding to both gingerbreak and visionary+ not working, but that last one doesn't surprise me.

Its a shame we cant simply replicate the signature on a PB99IMG.zip. Then it would be easy.

If we could fake HTC's signatures we'd effectively have an unlocked/unlockable bootloader.

People are talking about alpharev/unrevoked3 developing an update. This will require temp root -- so it may well already exist, I'm just not aware of it.
