Root Rooting, backup and ICS

on XDA they say that "Sdcard mounting on pc" doesent work, what is that?

I don't know... I haven't been following the ICS stuff on XDA, as I don't use it at the moment. I did try it out for a little while, just to see what it was like, but decided to not use it until a finished version is available. Perhaps Xyro will be able to answer...

And is it posibel to transfer my apps that i have now into ICS? Or can i just copy the data :)

I dont have so many apps that i use.

As I said last night, any apps you buy are linked to your google account. Whe you flash a new ROM on your phone, you will have to link you phone back up with your google account - this will then mean that the apps will download again. You aren't actually transferring anything... it is simply re-downloading them.

And if i root my phone now and install ICS ROM, do I loose everything when i update the ROM?

Thanks :)

If you root your phone, using the Hack kit I linked above, you shouldn't loose any data. When you flash a new ROM on your phone, you loose everything, unless you have it backed up... as I explained, apps and contacts are linked to your google account, so they are (in effect) backed up. You can download apps that back up sms messages and call log (if you really want to).

If you flash an ICS ROM on your phone now and then have to flash an update later, you may or may not have to do a full wipe (dependant on what the ROM developers say).

You keep saying you are going to put an ICS ROM on your phone... that is fine, but please bear in mind that they are NOT completed at present... they are still BETA release ROM's and, as such, are not as stable as other ROM's.

If you want to put a ROM on your phone to show off to your friends with iphones, then (as Xyro and me both said) I wouldn't put an ICS ROM on at present, but the choice is yours!

I want my phone to look like a normal phone, not with too much fancy things for now. But it is posibel to custom things on the ICS ROM?

Will they update the ROM each week?

It is possible... all you need to do is download anything you want to customise your phone.

There is a thread on here that is updated (by one of our members) each time there is a change to the current ROM's that are based on ICS. They are currently a work in process and are being updated nearly on a daily basis.

SD Card mounting is when you connect your phone to a computer via USB and transfer files to/from your SD card.

E.g You want to put some pictures you've taken from your phone and add them to an album on your computer, you would connect your phone to your computer and drag/drop/copy your files to your hard drive.

Didn't even think of that... it's been a long day (at least I'm done at work now)!!

So how do I unroot it if the USB SD card mount doesent work?

If you want to go back to stock, you use an ruu file (as per Xyro). This would put EVERYTHING back to how it was pre root.

As far as I am aware, you don't put it on the SD card... It is run from the computer. Xyro (or someone else) can you confirm (as I've not used it myself)

If you're lucky, you'll also be able to transfer all of your apps too. It depends what your build number is, which will decided whether or not you have to factory reset the phone before rooting.

Do you mean transfering between the rooted one and the unrooted one?

And how can i do that? Is it auto?

I'm not sure if they can tell if you rooted it and then unrooted (without a wipe), but it's better to be safe than sorry (just in case) - unless someone can suggest otherwise!

As u see the dev. of ICS for the DHD, how long do u think it will take aprox. it is done? since it doesent look like there is any big problems exept the camera.

Hey, I have rooted my phone now, and i am trying to flash ICS... But when i start up the bootloader it goes AUTOMATICLY into the Hboot and want to update something else, i CANT do anything else when i turn on the phone with volume down and powerbutton. it AUTOMATICLY goes into the stupid update thing.... What shall i do ? :c

EDIT: I have changed the name to update.zip (the ICS build)

From HBoot, you need to select recovery to get into clockwork, can you do that?

Also, do you have a file called PD98IMG.zip on your SD Card? If so, delete it.

Ok, I runned the hackkit again and i got a bunch of errors, now it is stuck on the loading screen of my HTC. What now? have i bricked it?
