Root rooting blows for us non tekkies

Ok, Before I start 3 Simple Root Process, Do I need to uninstall Unrevoked3? How do you uninstall this. It is not the same as when I uninstalled unrevoked2. Like this process. menu<settings<applications<manageapplications<unrevoked<uninstall.

Great, So it will work using rom manager.

Yes. I did the following steps:

Step 1: Run unrevoked3 from computer to phone.

For these steps I used my phone alone:
Step 2: Download "ROM Manager" from the market
Step 3: Run "ROM Manager"
Step 4: Choose the option to download ROM
Step 5: Download chosen ROM
Step 6: Pop-up asking me if I want to back up and "wipe disk" *Not exact warning.

The phone did the rest and I've got a rooted phone with the ROM "Fresh". That ROM removed the Sprint bloatware, allowed me to tether, etc.

I tried the simple root way first but I kept getting the "pc36img.zip" file too old (or something like that).

Thanks so much James.

Which ROM/Guide should I use if all I want to do is remove Sprint bloat ware? I like Sense and I like my phone the way it is right now (1.47). I just want to get rid of all that extra crap Sprint put on my phone.

TheBiles guide walks you through every step, even too much detail in some areas. All you have to do is follow his instructions line by line and you're good. If you've already installed the OTA update I've seen plenty of other step-by-step guides out there.

I've done simple root, but I'm having problems going further. I want to try unrevoked, but they say to be at 1.47 first. How do I get there? No software updates are available.

Some of you guys are making it harder then it really is. If you just take your time and follow to the tee what it says .....well , most get it I guess so thats enough for now.

OK, You say if the hboot is 79.0000 you are not ready to load roms. I used Unrevoked3 for my initial root. My hboot shows 0.79.0000. I have loaded Fresh 1.0.1 and Baked snack 9.7 with this. I will say I used rom manager to do this. I am just wondering if i still need to go back and do simple root so that I can get the engineering hboot. If I wanted to go back and do simple root, How the world can I get rid of Unrevoked3????

I've read so much the wife feels neglected.

If 1.17.651.1 is not a typo it looks to me like you have successfully done the simpleroot. Now what you need to do is follow this process.

How to start over: Fully rooted stock 1.47.651.1 in one shot (no adb!) - xda-developers

This will get you to the current software build with full root. Then when cyanogen is released you will just go into recovery and load the new rom from sd.

I just rooted my OTA'd evo with the simpleroot method then i followed the steps in the post that i linked to. This was my first time rooting so I am by no means experienced in this.

Hold the volume down and power button to boot into hboot. What version does it say you have? If it is 76.200 you are good to go. That is the engineering hboot and you can load anything you want. If it is 79.0000 then you are not ready to install roms yet.

As I said I am new to this. I didn't think you would be able to load custom roms with the 79.000 hboot. Guess I was wrong. I was unrevoked3 rooted when I decided to do the Simpleroot method. I didn't bother uninstalling unrevoked.

No, I'm just wondering if I will need to go another route in order to flash other roms, Cause I did have trouble with loading damage control. It kept going into loop (which is a sign of not being properly rooted) I was able to flas baked snack and fresh so far. HMMMM

Ok so You were able to just do the simple root and then your hboot switched to 79.2000. Wait simple root does a full wipe correct??

Ok Just want to Make sure I am reading this correctly. You did the OTA Simple Root Method and then went to this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915 and followed the steps listed to get hboot 76.2000

make sure you let that page fully load and play out. refresh it and let it play out again.

then DONT close your browser, while its still open proceed to step4

Ok I got all of that loaded. Updated. I am stuck at the red section. When I go to recovery I get the black screen with the Triangle exclamation mark.

Note: This process will only work if you already have the engineering HBOOT. (If you have NAND unlocked, you already have it and can proceed confidently.) If you'd like to check the actual version, you can boot into HBOOT and look near the top of the screen: it should say HBOOT-0.76.2000, not 0.79.0000. If you have 0.79.0000, you will need to do Toast's Part 2 first before starting here.

  1. Download this file, rename it PC36IMG.zip, and put it on the root of your SD card however you like.
  2. Power off your phone.
  3. Hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons until the white screen appears.
  4. HBOOT will scan the PC36IMG.zip file. You'll see a blue progress bar on the right side of the screen.
  5. When it's finished scanning, it will ask if you want to start the update. Press the Volume Up button to answer Yes.
  6. Wait a while for it to flash all the images.
  7. If you get a "Fail-PU" error on the recovery image, see below.
  8. When it finishes and asks if you want to reboot the device, press the Volume Up button to answer Yes.
  9. After the phone has rebooted, delete the PC36IMG.zip file from your SD card.
  10. Download this file to your SD card:
  11. Power off your phone.
  12. Hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons until the white screen appears.
  13. If you forgot to delete PC36IMG.zip from your SD card, HBOOT will scan it again now. When it asks if you want to start the update, press Volume Down to answer No. When it asks if you want to reboot, press Volume Down again.
  14. Now you should be at the HBOOT menu. Press Volume Down to move the selection to RECOVERY and press the Power button to select it.
  15. In a moment, you'll be at a different looking menu.
  16. Using the Volume and Power buttons as before, select "Flash zip from sdcard."
  17. Select su-2.1-e-unsecure-signed.zip from the list and follow the prompts to flash it.
  18. When that's finished and you're back at the menu, choose "Reboot system now."
  19. You should now have root, unlocked NAND, working WiMAX, and great battery life. :-)

You're finished! The remainder of this post is supplemental information for those who are interested.

Mar 30 2010, 11:24:04.

I go down to select Recovery. I select recovery and press power button. It will then reset for about 10-15 secounds to the white HTC EVO 4G Screen. It will sit on the white Evo screen for less than 5 seconds. Then I get the Black screen with the Red Triangle. I can not even go into recovery using Rom manger either. When I click on Flash clockwork recovery, then select htc evo. It says An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands.

Thanks in advance for any help.

is that this what you have when you are at skating androids?[/QUOTE]

The rooting process has been frustrating and very rewarding for me. I have learned so much in the past month about android! I now have worked through my problems but I am also confident that if I screw up, there is enough support on these boards to get me going in the right direction. I am finally settling on ROM, flashing themes etc!!!

Geesh, that is not in the directions at all. You must go to the simple root. Click on extras>flash recovery>select recovery(clockwork), CLICK ON FLASH. Boom, rooted properly!!!
