Root Rooting Completed What Next? - Newbie

Hi,

I have had my HTC Desire for a year and finally decided to root my phone (using the revoked method), however I am unsure what I should do next, sorry if this has been posted before :) As I would like to get the best out of my phone.

Having rooted my phone and the Superuser Permission is showing within the app menu, however in the boot menu I am missing the nandroid option, any ideas?

I would really appreciate any assistance in what to do next? new ROM etc

Thanks

The beauty of Android is that once rooted, you can do almost anything you want.

This ranges from small things like under / overclocking the CPU for better performance, getting more internal memory via A2SD and then onto flashing new roms.

The latter is the most popular probably, ROMS are huge for the desire in terms of popularity. So much choice.

So I ask... are you happy with sense? Or do you want to try something else? I'll try and break it all down below.

-----------------------------------------

There are 3 main types of ROM on the HTC Desire.

1. Sense ROMS

This is the type you are already using. However now rooted, you can install custom versions of Sense to get new features and better experience. For example, you can run the ROM from the new Desire S / DHD / Sensation etc.

They tend to look like this.

New versions possible now your rooted.

Sense roms are really good if you just like the HTC sense experience, and all the extra features that come with them.

2. AOSP ROMS

These roms are also incredibly popular. They are modifications of stock android, ie. as found on the nexus one / nexus s.

They do not have any HTC sense on them, so are generally seen to run very quick and so on. It is a more minimalist look, but I use it and love it myself.

They look like this.

3. Miui ROMS

These are entirely different roms again. Developed by some crazy good chinese developers, this is like a reiteration of sense + stock put together. It offers a whole new look, different to the others. These roms offer a whole list of new features, some of which I absolutely adore. Perhaps wait till you are a bit more advanced for this, but remember them for the future. They are very interesting indeed.

---------------------------------------------------

I hope that is of some use. Of course you might be happy with Sense, in which case you could flash a modified version of sense with lots of new features, or just stick with the one you want. Flashing custom roms isn't for everyone. I love AOSP roms, but others prefer sense to everything else.

A word on custom recoverys. If you used unrevoked, it will have put one onto it.

Turn off the phone.
Hold down volume down and power.
Wait 30 seconds.
Using the volume controls scroll down to where it says recovery, then select it by pressing the power button.
It will now boot into your custom recovery called Clockworks, which allows you to flash new roms etc.
It will be green and is cool :)

Once your in there, take what is known as a nandroid. Go into backup / restore and click backup.

This takes an entire backup of your phone. It will restore it at any point to identical to that point in time. So if you do it now and something goes wrong later with rooting stuff, you can always safely and easily return back to how the phone is now.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions etc, or drop me a pm.

Enjoy the world of Android rooting. The sky is your limit ;)
