Root Rooting Esteem

Had my Esteem for 2 months now. Absolutely love this baby. But, I see that it's slowing down some. I know nothing about rooting a phone, but have heard that it improves the performance.
Want to learn things on my own, but I need a push in the right direction lol. Would someone please point me to how I can root my phone?

Just wanted to add that this are the best forums I just really appreciate how everyone helps out of each other here without any interest or benefits in return this is amazing sorry I am not a tech person but I am a fan of you guys that have the brains and skills to do this things for our phones.
