Root Rooting exploit for a stock 2.2 phone is now available!

Does simple root work if I downgrade to 2.1 with this method? Or do I have to use unrevoked, because I really dont want to.

You can use simpleroot. Just make sure you check for updates when you first run the program. You need the update or else it will fail.

ok how bad did i mess up?

got through this:

"adb shell
chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
chmod 0755 /data/local/flash_image"

and this

cd /data/local/tmp
./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

but as i was toggleing airplane i got the $ so i went to try again but my computer died in the middle...OSWTFDIDN!....

so i restarted and typed in cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools\
that worked to get me to the right directory-

C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>

but when i type in adb shell it just goes to the next line and im unable to enter text in the cmd promt at that point. like it freezes or is otherwise not responding

should i go back and run the chmod's again?
i guess my question is what is safe to do twice and what is not

Figured it out! My phone was not being recognized through adb all i had to do was unplug my phone turn off debugging and plug it back in and turn debugging back on. Then just opened up a shell and continued where i left off and then BAM!...booted up into 2.1! now off to simple root... whohaahaahaha!

thanks

Note: the PC36IMG.zip will take longer than expected to transfer to the sdcard. It is a BIG file.

How long exactly is this going to take bcoz it's been like more than 5 minutes...am i doing something wrong?

I have a brand new 16gb sdcard in...OTA 2.2...downloaded everything and did exactly what to do...it pushed all the other files and then when i came to the pc3img.zip, it's just doing nothing...how long do i have to wait?

When this works it goes under 5 mins, at least it did for me.

I had to do it several times before it took.

Same goes for step 1 of the unrevoked3. In my case i think it was a matter of my trying to be smarter than the directions. I didn't install HTC Syc and immediately remove as was reccomended because ADB was working. Once I did that the recovery image transferred right over and I was on my way. Be sure to install the Unrevoked 3 driver for the HBOOTUSB part.

I'm rooted and happy again

I'm a little confused. One some sites I'm reading that there is a way to unroot after using unrevoked forever, other sites say that it can be unrooted 'a little', and other say that it cannot be done.

If possible, I want to go back to plain jane Android 2.2 with HTC Sense. Is this possible?

The ROM I'm running is just that (the OTA 2.2) + root. It looks exactly like it did before I rooted it only now I can wifi tether and use shootme etc.

If you want exactly like what you have now in the ROM you could revert to 2.1 and just accept the OTA upgrade to 2.2

The only 'left over' would be the Unrevoked forever changes but you'd have to look for that by booting to the bootloader / recovery.

I was able to follow these instructions and downgrade to 2.1, root and then install a custom ROM. I'm pretty comfortable with command line, so it wasn't such a big deal for me. Now I'm happy that my phone is pretty much doing everything I want it to do. Just need to figure out a way to play WAV files from my office phone system voicemail...

I ran the 2.2 hack and downgraded to 2.1. From there I ran Unrevoked 3 to root+unlock nand, then Unrevoked Forever to S-OFF so I can re-flash if I locked myself out of the OS again.

Then I flashed the 2.2 Release+Root ROM and I'm back to where I started, except, now I have root so I can run wireless tether, which is all I really wanted to do anyway :)

That said, now I'm at the point I can easily install new kernels etc., I'm starting to look at FPS unlocks and other such things.

Thanks for everyone who replied...I'm VERY new to the rooting scene; I actually should have never tried it. After much prayer, sweat, and reading, I FINALLY got it back to normal, lol.

Ok, I spoke too soon. I'm trying to use Unrevoked Forever S-ON, but everytime I press volume down & power & then select Recovery, the phone boots to the red triangle/exclamation mark combo. Any advice?

I went from 2.2 to 2.1 and used simple root to load diff roms and I tried 2 different roms and it keeps powercycling of both roms. Any suggestions?

Did you (successfully) flash a recovery image, either Amon RA or ClockworkMod Recovery? You push a file with a name like "recovery-RA-evo-v1.7.0.2.img" or "recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-supersonic.img" to your SD card, then flash it.

S-ON? Do you mean S-OFF?

If you set S-ON, you'd better have a standard (signed) ROM loaded, otherwise who knows what'll happen.

Ok, so I need to leave it as S-OFF? I want to go back to as close as factory/normal as possible. I used RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.26.651.6_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_NV_1.40_release_140444_signed.exe to get back to 2.2. When I boot and try to do a recovery, I get the aforementioned red triangle.

I'm now rooted again with this new way. I also use rooted froyo listed in novox77 sig. I also flash the wimax and radio. my question now is what do I need to do to be able to uninstall the stock apps. I've been searching threads here and at xda and I can't seem to find a clear cut answer.

Use Titanium Backup - just give a tap on the app in question, and a page with an uninstall option appears.

FIRST THOUGH - and I cannot stress this enough - do a nandroid backup!!!

thanks earlymon I loaded TB and I click on stock/sprint tv/nfl and a couple others, then I clicked on uninstall, I even reboot after but I still see the apps and if I click on them they still open up and work.

You can buy Root Explorer ($4) and:

Navigate up to system/app
Tap the mount to R/W button (read/write permission)
Rename the suffix of the files/apps you want to uninstall from .apk to .bak
Mount back to R/O (read only)
Exit out
Reboot the phone and they should be gone

Or you can do it for free via ADB.

Hey gang, anybuddy know what's up here?

I used the root explore, remount to r/w
found the files under system/apps
renamed Sprint_NFL.apk to Sprint_NFL.bak
renamed successful
reboot phone, app is still there

used the adb via wireless and usb

adb shell
su
cd/system/app
ls (to get the right names)
rm Sprint_NFL.apk or any apps
comes back failed it says it's in read only mode.

I found this on another forum it's for the droid x but I figured it should still work

"adb shell

Now, in either ADB or terminal, type (Thanks biggestmexi):
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

You're now ready to start removing/moving the apps you don't want. To get a list:
cd /system/app
ls

You'll notice most look more or less like the names you see in the app drawer. Pick out the ones you don't want and use the command below to rename them (we're renaming instead of deleting so you can rename them back if you break something). If you're not sure what something is, I'd recommend NOT renaming it. Renaming the CityID, for example:
mv CityID.apk CityID.bak

CityID.apk is, obviously, the name of the app. After renaming it to .bak, Android won't recognize it as an app. After you're finished, update the list of apps Android sees:
sync"

reboot the phone, still nothing I know the phone is rooted b/c I'm using many apps that only works when rooted.

Do you have Flipz' Fresh Evo Kitchen or Fresh Kitchen 3.0? If so, you can use it to remove Sprint apps. At the moment it's only available to donors.

It's a personal choice to donate or not, and he doesn't ask or require it. He makes all his work available to everyone anyway. If you've used his ROMs, flashed radios from his site, or somehow benefited from his many contributions, you might give a thought to tossing him a couple GWs, and you'll get a head start with a tool that will get this done. Just a thought.
