Rooting for ATT

Calim

Lurker
So I have no idea when ATT will release the S2 in the US but I do not know if my really old iPhone is gonna make it that long. I was wondering what the steps would be if I wanted to try and buy this phone and root it. As the phone cost a very pretty penny I would want to make sure I would be able to do this and successfully use the phone on ATTs network with all its wonder.

I would like to wait for it to be released but they have not announced anything so I don't imagine will be for at least another couple months.

Thanks.

Its not too hard to root. There are loads of guides out there of how to do it. Once rooted you can download GS2 unlock from the market which will unlock your phone to any network.

Yes I have seen a couple different guides and some of them say this is dangerous and could render the phone useless if done wrong. Now I'm not to worried I will do something wrong... that is unless I follow a guide that is wrong. It would also seem that there are multiple "unlock" apps around I wouldn't want to use a bad version of one of those. Thanks for the info though.

I just hope these damn US carriers straighten up and let us have what we want.

If you buy an unlocked phone you do not need to root or unlock it. I bought mine from NetCom in Norway as an "Open plan" and it is not locked at all. I used my Telenor sim in the phone until I landed back in the US at which time I booted up with my AT&T sim. Many of the features work fine without having to pay extra for a "feature" of the phone, like mobile wifi hotspot.

There is no firmware or Kernel specific to AT&T.

This is the same issue I am running into when I root my phone tomorrow. I am wondering if a Frankenstein Firmware and Kernel will work (XXKG6). Anybody know?

You don't need a firmware/kernel specific to AT&T to use the SGS2 on AT&T. I am using a stock out of the box SGS2 I bought in person in Norway.

I know this, I am wondering if all firmware versions will work (for rooting purposes), or more specifically Frankestein XXKG6)

Subscribing as I just got the phone yesterday and am running it on ATT. I am trying to find out about this firmware thing myself and what I actually need to do to root.

May just shoot over to XDA forums to ask too.

Let us know what you find out.

I am still waiting to root my phone until I do some more research...

Very easy to do. I had the international version running in Canada (same bands as at&t).

Here is how to root any Galaxy s2

When you get the phone dial *#1234# to find out what firmware you are running

Then head to xda (I'll post the direct link when I am in front of a computer) and download a rooted kernel that matches your phone's firmware as closely as possible.

On your phone go to settings >applications >development to check on USB debugging

Then use Odin and the instructions given on the firmware page (in the link I will add or see my rooting guide). This will install the rooted kernel and your phone will be rooted.

Done and done :)
