Rooting Galaxy S2 - Dummies Guide

Hi guys, i have successfully rooted my device and is now running thr vk 5.1.2 and siyah 3.3.2. Do i sill need to keep the system power savings thing in settings on?

Hi ironass, i followed the instructions and did a titanium backup post rooting and then followed on to flash the kernel and rom. after that i did a restore via titanium and got all the apps back. but now i have alot of apps in my titanium that aren't installed in my device and shows up in the apps list with a line thru them. can i just delete those apps from titanium? if i decide to unroot and flash back the stock rom, will those apps be installed with the stock rom?
 
So I'm a newb to rooting and read the whole guide through.

Not had the balls to try it just yet.
Do I need a factory reset of my phone to start the rooting procedure? I think i'm not fully following how i can back up my phone to make sure nothing goes wrong...
Maybe someone can give me a bit more explenation on the back up part?

but i read a lot (atleast that's what i think) about rooting SGSII here and on the XDA forum.

so far i understand, u don't need to factory reset ur phone to root.

So If I read correct the backups can allow me to reset my phone should anything go wrong while rooting? Or is it purely backup for apps and data?
Is there even a way to restore a root gone wrong? (Is that what they call a bricked phone?)

Sorry if these questions are the noob of noob questions but I'm just looking for answers.

Posts #1 and #2 of this thread explain, in great detail, step-by-step, with a video, on how to root your phone.

In answer to your question... no Factory Reset is required. If you want to back up your phone, for whatever reason, you can do so via Samsung Kies and watching the tutorial or by using MyBackUp from the Play Store.

Purely backup of app's and data.

Is there even a way to restore a root gone wrong? (Is that what they call a bricked phone?)

Just read back through this thread and you will see that no-one has bricked their phone following these instructions to the letter.

1 thing i learnt when i rooted my phone, as i used the wrong cf-root kernel initially.

download the stock rom first. its quite a big file and takes a while to download. i needed it to get my phone back on after flashing the wrong kernel and the phone refusing to boot. took me 2 hours to download the rom. 2 hrs felt like 2 days not knowing the fate of my phone....
 
ok.....i just rooted my SGSII.
did a NANDROID backup and Titanium backup.

all perfect thanks to this thread, the modders, XDA-forum and AndroidNZ.net.

p.s. do i need to flash a kernel right now or maybe later?
and can i flash speedmod kernel into my stock ics 4.0.3 without flashing a custom rom? :confused:

Themes are usually .zip files flashed via CWM Recovery.
 
i rooted my SGSII last night.

everything is working fine except i cant flash theme.apk.zip file from cwm recovery.
i switched off my phone.
booted into recovery mode (vol up+home+power)
selected install zip file from sd card
(at first i tried to flash theme.zip file from sdcard but in recovery mode i didnt see that file.so i zipped the file from within the phone.this time i saw the file in cwm recovery.)
selected theme.apk.zip file

then i received these following lines
''installation initialize....
installation aborted.....''

i tried to do it again but no luck.
any idea why?
and what should i do now?

This isnt really the thread to be asking this, better would be to start a new thread, but for what it's worth, with a file name like that, my guess is it's not a CWM flashable zip, but a zip file of a .apk. Open the zip and see what's inside. If its just a .apk file, extract it, copy it to you sd card then run via My Files app.
 
could you please clarify few things for me here. i'm new to android and still learning. i have sg2 not rooted yet! but it will happen in the nearest future as soon as i know the difference between kernels. from this thread i've learnt that i can root my I9100MULD3 ICS with LP7 kernel, but now what if i want to roll back to GB, do i have to install different kernel? second, some roms that i;ve browsed say that they come with kernel! what does it mean? and, will they(roms) work with LP7 kernel that i will have on my device or i will have to put another kernel again? and finally what is the difference between CF-******LP7 kernel and siyah one? i hope i orgonized my questions well. thanks.

Now that you are already on stock ICS, you will need to flash a GB ROM/firmware, which will contain its own kernel, to downgrade.

Exactly that! The firmware comes with its own kernel to control operations. For an explanation of what a kernel does, see, Android A to Z: What is a kernel?

ROM's come with their own kernel.

and finally what is the difference between CF-******LP7 kernel and siyah one?

The CF-Root kernel, LP7, is identical to the LP7 kernel that comes with your stock firmware except that it has been engineered to provide you root access. Siyah kernel is one that you can flash after you are rooted and offers battery and performance improvements.

Welcome to the forum sg2bg and thanks for joining.

If you want to go back to gb you won't have to flash a different kernel first. When you flash the gb firmware the kernel will be changed to a compatible one at the same time. You also don't need to worry about compatibility of custom roms with your current kernel as your kernel will be replaced with the one which comes with the Rom when you flash.

Cfroot is pretty much a stock kernel which offers you root access whereas siyah will offer root plus a lot of advanced features.

im new to this rooting stuff and i have a question, my kernal version is 3.0.15-I9100TDOLP7-CL70191

what kernal should i use for root because i am unable to find CL7? thanks!
