So when I try to root manually, I follow all instructions to the T, but the 2nd command I type "adb devices" returns this error "adb is not recognized as and internal or external command, operable progam, or batch file"

I've tried several times and can't get past it. I'm on Windows 7

Build: 2.32.651.2 CL282911 release-keys
 
It is most likely a HTC Driver issue, did you install HTC latest drivers, also there are easier ways to root your phone, have you tried Z4Root, it is simple and done from your phone with one click.

I can try Z4Root...

When I tried updating drivers/software and running RUU I can't get past the "waiting for bootloader" screen. Then a window shows up saying my phone isn't connected, which it is. The RUU recognizes the current version on my device, suggests the update to the .6 version, and then a minute or two in it says the device is not connected...WTF!?

Anyone?

If you are trying to use the regaw leinad method, your build obviously should end in 5
 
tripnbili - I have the same issue you have when I try to apply the RUU (to go back to 1.5). Also, I am trying z4root but it just stays there on the 'Please wait.." screen.

My issue is that I am running the latest 2.1 maint update and can't even get throught the RUU to go back to1.5 and root properly.

Help!

You will not be able to run the 1.5 ruu, only the 2.1 ruu
 
You are correct. I actually fixed the problem by using the latest version of z4root after I realized I was using an old one. Now my Hero is running Froyo and working like a charm. I still cannot get over it!
