Root Rooting Help

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I could use some help. I have been trying to root my EVO 4G using HTCdev method. I'm following the instructions to the letter and everything seems to be going well up until step 8. When I type the the prompt, a message appears on my PC stating "The drive is not ready for use. A door may be open" What does this mean and how do I get around it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, glad to be here. My phone is not in fastboot. It says this when I enter the prompt "oem get_identifier_token" in step 8. My was plugged in at the time.

step 3 on the HTCdev site says to put the phone in fastboot. you need to be there in order for the command to work.

ok, cool. I can't believe I missed that. Thanks! Last question: because this will watermark the phone, do you think that I'll have any problems bringing it back to Sprint for an upgrade after my contract is up next year?

yeah you should be ok. i would just flash a stock rom before turning it in. also you can unroot your phone. i have just added instructions to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html.

but you can also find it here:

Now I'm getting to step 13. When I enter the code into the cmd, the same message pops up. After I close it out, the prompt comes up that it is sending the code, but it never moves from there?

nope, never finishes. What do you mean by bootloader? The message in the cmd?

on your phone. when you select fastboot on your phone that screen is called the bootloader. it is kind of like a mini os system that is running on your phone.

try and re-enter the code. are you sure that you are entering it correctly? and just to be sure, this is the code the htc sends to you via email, correct?

Tried it 3 times, it does the same thing every time. The bootloader doesn't say anything. The code is correct, and yeah this is the code in the email. I don't know if this helps, web I put the code in, the phone screen becomes unresponsive until I pull out the usb cord.

the bootloader does not have touch capabilities. so if you are in fastboot it should say fastboot usb. if it does not say that then you are not in fastboot. and do not pull the cord out. how long are you waiting? give it sometime to unlock the bootloader.

I waited for about 3 to 4 minutes and the status bar never moved. It does say fastboot usb. I'm not taking about touch, the volume and power buttons are stuck until the cord is removed

ok let it go for like 10-15 min. it should be fine after that. also you should never pull the cord out while it is in process. it could mess things up.
