Root Rooting HTC Desire Question

Hi everyone,

Since HTC are taking a long while to update to Gingerbread I was considering rooting my phone in order to try out Cyanogenmod version 7. I was particularly interesting in rooting so I could use Data2SD, because as you all know, even with Apps2SD, internal storage space is very limited.

What I was wondering is, if I backup my phone, with the original factory settings and HTC's pre-installed 2.2 Froyo in full working order, and I decide to root my phone and install Cyanogenmod 7, If I change my mind or if something goes wrong, can I revert to the state the phone was in upon purchase? with my data, contacts etc intact?

Also, If I begin using Cyanogenmod will all my paid apps be available?

Any help will be much appreciated, thanks.

First thing to do, if you're not rooted, is find the RUU for your phone so you can go back to stock should you need to. Go to

Settings>About phone>Software information and post up your 'Software version'. We can then find a link to the correct RUU

Then it's just a case of root and have fun!

RUU should help if things go really bad, so you need to have it.
Only after you root, you can backup your phone fully with Froyo 2.2, and be able to return to it.

Paid apps are tied to your Google account, so yes, they will be available on CM7.

storage with apps2sd is not very limited at all unless you have an insane amount of apps
With app2sd it is normally enough if you are on custom MTD.
With a2sd+ it is even better, because you can move more and still combine it with custom MTD. This eliminates the need for Data2SD.

Just making sure because you used apps2sd v a2sd+ instead of a2sd v as2sd+ or apps2sd v apps2sd+, it gets confusing, especially since there is an app called apps2sd too :)

Ive taken to using 'default "move to SD"' but its a very vague subject as not everyone subscribes to the same naming conventions.

Now that you mention it, calling it "Froyo method of storing apps on the sdcard" seems to indicate that there is another method of moving apps to SD card under Gingerbread...
Better to call it then "Default Google style move to SD"?

There is. It uses the "gingerbread method of storing apps on the sdcard" ;)

yeah Default android method sounds better.

As we know, Gingerbread also moves the libs so it is slightly different to the froyo version.

You are right. Just tested under GB and I see next to apk also lib moved to SD. I guess what remains is Apps Data, Cache and Dalvik under GB.

Let me try this again: :D
Default Froyo a2sd
Default GB a2sd
a2sd+
d2sd

Interesting to see that a2sd+ compared with Default GB a2sd still wins with Dalvik cache (for me about 100MB difference). I'll play a bit with moving everything from one place to another...

Yeah a2sd+ does seem to shift more.

Of course then if you use "move to sd" whilst a2sd+ is in place on GB, you shift the libs to FAT. Its not good having an app split 3 ways like that though

Sure, mixing them increases the change for errors.
The only thing I'm wondering is how well apps feel to be on FAT32 partition as opposed to on ext3 partition (speed, reliability).

well when i said apps2sd i meant a2sd+ as ive already had this discussion with Susan
just a sli[p in typing as i was saying apps2sd in my head

I've just tried rooting my Desire using unrEVOked. It said rooting failed, firmware too new? :( I really wanna root but I don't wanna break my phone I paid so much money for. Is there any way to increase the app storage space without rooting? I'm tired of getting the limited space error -.-

Also, I have already used the force all apps to SD method which can be found at this link: http://androidforums.com/desire-tips-tricks/160560-force-apps-install-sd-without-root.html
and my apps storage space is still so low :(

That's a bit of a generic message from unrevoked. It might mean that your firmware is too new, but there are other things that produce the same message.

Have a look at the rooting FAQ (linked from the sticky thread at the top of this forum, which is also linked from my sig, or directly from SUroot's sig), as there is a section on just this message.

That section about that message does actually say you have to reverse the force apps to sd process
