Root Rooting ICS

for the first question. yes. it will replace all system files with new ones but keep your data.

Thanks. I flashed the modified 6.7.246 fxz and all my data is still intact. Unfortunately, it didn't have any effect on my original problem: I still can't root the phone.

when you go to root a phone (any phone) that ha been rooted before it will fail at the pushing su app which is normal because the app is already there. you are not able to root for a different reason, your pc is not seeing your phone.

So you're saying that having Superuser already installed on my phone is not what's causing the batch file to hang. Rather, it seems more like a straight-up communication problem related to USB and/or adb.exe. That makes sense. However, I've tried any number of different flavors and versions of the Moto USB drivers to no avail.

At this point, I'm considering just using the unmodified 5.9.905 file to roll back to Gingerbread. I'm aware that I'll lose all my data, apps, etc. I don't mind re-installing everything, as long as I can have a rooted phone again. Plus, I'm not that impressed with ICS anyway.

If I decide to stick with Gingerbread, my next challenge would be figuring out how to block the persistent OTA notifications trying to persuade me to upgrade to ICS. Suuposedly this can be done by using Titanium Backup to freeze the updater.apk app.

Do not flash anything gb once you are on ics your phone will brick.

Dumb question are you using the USB cable that came with the phone or any original moto USB cable. If you are using an aftermarket cable such as a Kindle USB cable there's a good chance that's what's causing the problem

Thanks for the warning. Are you sure that rolling back to gb will brick my phone?

Yes, I'm using the original Moto usb cable. I also tried using the original cable that came w/ my wife's Bionic just to rule out a bad cable.

I've tried this on several different Windows computers, different Moto USB driver versions, and everything else I can think of.

I also tried the root package available here, as recommended by the poster above. Same result: the batch file stalls at "daemon started successfully" and there she sits.

Oh well. I'm certainly not the only one experiencing this problem when trying to root ICS. At least 3 other posters in this thread are in the same boat, and a Google search yields lots more. Hopefully someone will come up with a fix.

Not sure if this will help or just confuse the issue, but here is my experience.
I was rooted on .905 and the ICS update kept failing.
I used the modified .905 file posted by dfib and went back to a stock system.
This removed root but DID NOT delete the superuser app.
I then was able to update to ICS via the OTA update.
Once that completed and I made sure everything was working, I successfully rooted with Razrs Edge first try.
I never removed the superuser app from my phone.

EDIT:
I have a colleague at work that was in the same boat. Was rooted, could not take update, flashed modified.905, updated to ICS, rooted ICS with Razrs Edge...

Marine One,
This worked perfectly. I followed the video and downloaded the necessary software and it worked perfectly! I am now rooted on the official version of ICS.

Thanks!

Glad to have been able to help. I have pulled so much good information from other on this forum that it was nice to finally pay some of it back by helping another member.

You can't get it there anymore. The link has been removed over some petty silliness.

Apparently everyone has to suffer for that.
I pay for bandwidth and host some files to help people out, all I ask in return is people don't directly link to them because those links tend to spread all over the place, not petty silliness.

Use the one suggested by Marine One and make sure that you install the Motorolla Device manager, NOT JUST the drivers.

FYI Razrs_edge did not work for me, however androidroot.org did.

I was on .905 originally (non leak) but I could not get ICS. I had to flash .246 with RSD lite.

I'm in the same boat. I could not get my rooted bionic running GB to install the OTA update. Verizon sent me a new phone under warranty which I was able to successfully update to ICS. However I now am unable to root it. I've tried DroidRazrRootICS, Motofail, Razrs Edge, and one other one. I loaded the most recent Motorola drivers and latest Motorola Device Manager. No joy. I tried doing it with Linux. No joy. This morning I brought it in and tried it on my work computer with the same new drivers and all varieties of rooting scripts. No joy. I'm using the original Motorola USB cable which has always worked for me in the past and indeed I can transfer files or whatever I want with this cable. I've carefully followed all of the tutorials and videos that are out there.
I think that Moto or Verizon have fixed all the holes which allowed previous versions to be rooted.
I need to get this thing rooted so I can get to my backed up data through Titanium. I particularly have to restore all my passwords saved in UPM.

Just to ask the question, you have enabled USB debugging on the phone prior to trying to root it?

For something like Motofail, which you download in a .zip file, I move the .zip into a folder on the c: drive that I call c:\Motofail and then expand the zip file. Then I start a command prompt (Start, type "cmd" followed by enter), enter the command cd \Motofail, then enter run to start the run.bat file, rather than just double-clicking this file in File explorer.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I have tried all USB settings on the phone and I have tried running all the scripts from a command prompt terminal. I get one of several messages. "Daemon running", "Rooting" or "waiting for device"(if I don't restart between attempts).

Delete all the drivers off of your pc and reboot the computer.
Install motohelper and then reboot your pc again.
Reboot your phone.
When your pc and phone are full loaded plug your phone in and go through each option for usb letting the drivers install for each.
Then boot your phone into fastboot and allow the drivers to install for that.
Reboot the phone. now try and run razors edge because that is the one that has worked for me.

So I did every step in the quick little one click root method video from the website listed below. I am rooted, I actually did it twice to make sure and I am for sure rooted only it didn't put busy box or SuperSU on my phone. It said that no path name or something another did not exist. Now I checked and I have everything that I was told to have on my computer. I don't get how I ended up not having it. I did put the normal superuser on my phone and it says that I don't have the binary files. I think I know what that means but I'm not sure. Also I manually downloaded SuperSU and it says that binary files were not found and that this is a problem. How do I go about fixing this?? I rooted my bionic out of pure curiosity and because it was easy to do. I may just go back to stock ICS if it's not to much of a problem but honestly this was just a test because I figured why not?

droidbionicroot.com is the website, sorry for my oversight. Anyways it has a youtube video on it and I followed it every step of the way.

Perhaps I should clarify a bit further. I used the method posted by Marine One. I again followed everything step by step and I have everything stated that I need. I have after the fact downloaded busy box installer and every version I have tried from it says that it has failed and to try a different one. So again I'm just a bit at a loss with not knowing what is going on. I honestly in doing to root wanted to find some sort of app to help with battery life increase and with the stopping of background processes stopping for good. Just an annoyance that I have with constantly having to end them myself. Thanks for the help in advance.

Another nightmare to root. Ive tried motofail and the method from razers edge (or however you spell it.) and no software appears able to touch this phone. It claims the phone is rebooting, claims that the phone is rooted etc but there is absolutely no effect on the phone. Its not even my phone, its my friends but IMO the bionic and ICS are both useless piles of crap. I have a prepaid Proclaim that just blows the bionic out of the water in every way-battey life, reception, speed (at 400 mhz the Proclaim still runs faster and smoother than the Bionic does at full capability), UI-and after handling the bionic I will never be fooled into purchasing any of these "high end devices." The simpler an Android is, the better.

The file that you are using when unzipped is there a busybox and superuser file in there?

I believe so. I looked at it before I started the process and afterwards and I do believe I saw it. I will look again to make sure. Did I somehow miss a step?
