Rooting problem

I thought I'd go for it rooting wise and have hit a bit of a problem early doors. Could be me, but if anyone could offer a tip I'd appreciate it. Bit annoyed with myself for needing help at the first hurdle to be honest:mad:

I followed the xda guide and got this far having downloaded android sdk r10 windows....

  • open Device Manager (or run devmgmt.msc) make sure you don't see this problem (windows failed to identify the SNS and install the correct drivers)
  • android10.png
  • Do a right click and select Update Driver Software
  • Select Brose my computer for driver software
  • point it to where you downloaded the Android SDK 2.3 (..\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver)
  • Make sure to CLICK "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
  • Then from the list 3 choices select Android Bootloader Interface
  • If it's installed properly it should show up like this (reboot is not required)
Trouble is step one is the problem I saw and couldn't find a folder called android bootloader interface. It didn't show up like this so I'm not sure where to go. Where have i gone wrong?

Tried the unlockr guide first. Went to step 2 (set up adb) and followed the instructions. This took me to a link for htc hero software - nothing else. Not only that, the link was dead so I didn't get too far there.

Why am I the only person struggling with this? Typical!!!! Can anyone provide me with a direct link to the driver I need?

I've got Windows 7

Tried to connect using PDAnet with phone in fastboot mode. Just hangs saying 'connecting to your phone....'
I know I'm doing something obvious wrong, just can't work out what it is.

In my first post above where it says

Then from the list 3 choices select Android Bootloader Interface, I can only find Android ADB interface.

So I tried the unlockr instruction..........

To try and explain the problem I've had with the unlockr guide a bit better....

I read step 1....ok
Got to step 2 so followed the link to set up adb.
When I got to step 4 of the adb set up it told me to go to a workaround for win 7 which I've got.
That leads me to a load of HTC Vista drivers. Is that correct???? Would I want to load them on a Nexus S?

This is where I'm getting confused, and like I say I have Android ADB interface showing up, not Android bootloader interface.

Any help gratefully received as I really want to crack this (without knackering the phone)

Maybe you don't have the drivers in your \google-usb_driver folder. Go to your SDK folder and run the SDK Manager.exe. It'll probably prompt you to update some things. Go ahead and update if you like. Eventually, you'll want to get to the point where you can click on "Available Packages" where under Third Party Add-Ons>Google Inc, you should see Google USB Driver Package. Select it and click Install Selected. Then try going through your steps again.

Well...........I'm sat here in fastboot mode with a <waiting for device> message on the cmd.exe. It's been like that for 10 mins or so now so I guess nothing is happening.

All drivers downloaded, everything that I could possibly download from sdk downloaded, pdanet stuff downloaded....proper stuck. Haven't found a guide which tells me what to do if things don't work yet, they all assume success which isn't the case here unfortunately.

Really no idea at all what to do now so could really use some help. This is proving to be far more difficult than it should be!

Anyone got any tips for me?

Don't feel bad....this forum dead and I have yet to figure it out. I am on Ubuntu 10.10 and get fastboot
Command uknown and even tried it on my wifes windows 7 machine and I get the waiting like you I gave up and almost want a new device that has a busy forum...

Just go over to xda almost any if not all your problems will be answered if you just search or ask for help. That's exactly what it's there's for.
