Root rooting question re: using HTC Sync 3.0.5511

i tried to use the htc sync version 2.0
but it wouldn't let me install onto my computer.

am i able to root using this version? HTC Sync 3.0.5511

and if yes do i just follow directions after installing? (ie: install then uninstall)?

thank you in advance and sorry for the noob questions.

You are supposed to uninstall HTC Sync from your computer before trying to root. It can cause issues and not allow Unrevoked to root your phone correctly or at all. On occasion, some have had to install Sync then uninstall it just to get the drives on the computer for Unrevoked to recognize the phone. Other than that, it need to be uninstalled prior to rooting.

Edit: Sorry, missed the install then uninstall in your post. Have you tried installing the drivers that are listed in the Rooting Guide?
