Root Rooting question

Ok. I followed SirEagle's pdf and when I get to boot using Vol Up and Power/End, all the phone does is reboot. I can't get into Amon-Ra's. Any ideas?

tproctor,

"you are not alone" :D

See this recent post:

or if that doesn't work, then this post that immediately follows (http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies-6.html#post1274382) should help. Here's the relevant part of the second URL which should work if the first doesn't:

Just wanted to thank all for helping, I had the issue where Vol Up - End did nothing.

But by pressing End-Call (green-red) and then selecting Recovery, it booted into Amon_RA's recovery where everything else went as laid out.

Okay, I downloaded SetCPU from the market, but my slider bars only allow me to go 528/528. I downloaded the ATE and do have "su" permission. How do I overclock?

tproctor,

What custom ROM did you install? (and what is "ATE"?...you got me on that one ).

edit: oh, I get it now: ATE = Android Terminal Emulator (doh! :))

I followed the .pdf to install root without a rom (therefore no wipe). I installed the Terminal Emulator and typed in "su". Got the # sign and typed in exit. I purchased SetCPU from the market and it has root access, but I can't figure out how to overclock with it.

lol, sorry 'bout that! I forgot what thread I was in!

Okay, since you are really running the stock Eris ROM, you'll have to install an overclock patch that will allow your phone to overclock.

I posted something for PiperCub49 the other day that should do the trick for you: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/135849-how-do-i-flash-oc-patch.html#post1253948

I actually just flashed this patch on my Eris today. I had rooted the old/traditional way and was/am running Ivan's Eris Official 1.0 w/o. That custom ROM is kernel-locked to 710MHz and even though I'm happy with that speed, I finally felt the freedom to play around with my Eris 'cause I've got my X as my main phone now. Process is pretty simple (just as described in the above link). After rebooting, I'm able to slide the bar as far as I need/want to (still 710MHz :D).

P.S.: Just make sure you take a Nandroid backup to protect yourself.

P.P.S: You also might want to read through this thread http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/98457-overclocking-hmm.html?highlight=overclocking+hmm -- its got a lot of good info/discussion in there (don't overclock too high too fast; don't enable "set-on-boot" until you know your phone is stable)

ok maybe a nooby question. first time rooting. if i flash a rom and i end up not liking it how would i flash another rom?

hob0d4n,

Here's the general sequence of events for rooting:

1. get a custom recovery partition (usually Amon_RA's) installed
2. download a custom rooted ROM and place on the top-level of your /sdcard (don't forget to verify your MD5 sums)
3. boot your phone into custom recovery
4. make a Nandroid backup
5. do any wipes per the developer's ROM website / thread
6. flash the custom ROM
7. reboot and enjoy your rooted ROM

Achieving step #1 above can be done via a few different methods. There are two pretty easy methods now:

- or -

http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html

To initially get root with a custom ROM, you will do steps #1 through #7 in one form or another in the above two links.

To install a new / different ROM like you are asking, after you've rooted, you would do steps #2 through #7.

Just wanted to let you know that I successfully rooted the phone the other night, and have now overclocked, adblocked, and gotten rid of those darn 'stocks, peep, and visual voicemail' aps. Still too chicken to take the plunge into different ROMS (and honestly don't quite understand how a lot of the nandroid backup and shell adb and terminal emulator linux-y stuff works yet, so it's probably just as well). Thanks for all the help and reassurance. We eris users are really lucky to have such a helpful and nice group of folks on these forums.
