Root rooting questions

I have decided to try to root. Very non technical person. I have been reading all the stuff here. I want to do a back up before I root, but it seems like titanium or the other one only works when rooted. So i guess that means I have to be rooted before I do the back up?

yes you must root first then you can use titanium to back up apps amd data and use bootstrap to back up everything should you choose to mess with roms and such ..here is a good root app
