Root rooting/ROM help. need suggestions

Okay, heres the deal. I wanna root, but just soley for the purpose of overclocking and the abilty to install apps to my SD card. Im running 2.1 OTA. What ROM/overlay should i use after i root, cos im happy with my phone the way it is aside from the not being able to install apps to SD and overclocking. Any suggestions? A step by step guide would be great cos im pretty new to this whole ROM thing, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

smash rom or t2noobs plain jane2
smash has a little bit more but they are basically a tricked out stock rom
