Help Rooting the TB

Android Expert
I got purchased a new/(used used less than a week) TB today and wanted to know is it anymore difficult to root a TB since it has a sim card versus something like my Droid X? I didn't know if the sim card made things any trickery?

Would you loose root if you deactivate the TB and then re-activate it with another sim card? because you have to get a new sim card each time it is activated, even with the same phone number.

Thanks!

Rooting the Thunderbolt is not harder than any other device in my opinion. I had to root my Inc the long way before the one-click method so it was basically the same for my Tbolt. Im not sure about deactivating but i dont think rooting has much to do with the sim card. I do know that if you deactivate you will need to get a new sim card. But im pretty sure it wont affect root. (if im wrong about the sim card, someone correct me)

If you're talking about a data wipe (as in when flashing to another ROM), you use the same SIM. I've flashed a lot of ROMs and still have the same SIM.

Rooting is not really difficult but it is an involved process compared to the DX (I used z4Root on mine). If you read the instructions all the way through before you start, download ALL necessary files before hand, and can copy and paste, you shouldn't have too many difficulties. Honestly, I had the most problems getting ADB set up correctly on my PC. I've rooted 4 times now (different handsets) using this method: [Procedure] How to Root the Thunderbolt with ADB (Windows) - Android Forums

and it's very easy and self explanatory

Compared to other devices with "One Click Roots" the TB is definitely harder to root. However it's a simple process in general. It may be a little intimidating for newer Android users, but like everything involving root, read the instructions, ask questions and you'll be fine.

Use the auto_root method, it's very straight forward.

You download the HTC syc driver, plug in your tbolt, and follow the prompts via adb. Really all you have to do during the process is press enter to run the codes and unplug and re-plug your phone once or twice.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Yeah, I used the z4root on my X and very simple. I have flashed a bunch of roms on it and played with it a bunch. So, I am pretty knowledgable on the rooted DX, just never got into the TB until now. Looking at rooting it and playing with it some as well. Just not looking forward to the long root way :( but I will live.

Thought of another question. Do you have to have a sim card in the TB and have the phone activated to be able to root it? Again, Sorry, coming from the one click root deal on the non-sim card X.

Not sure about this, but heard the sim card isn't needed. That being said, I had mine activated with the sim card in it when I rooted it. I also came from the DX and thought that the Thunderbolt rooting process was a bit overwhelming because I had no prior knowledge of adb coding, but the auto_root does all the coding for you. Read up on the auto-root process and see if that's something you'd be comfortable doing. After the device is rooted, flashing custom roms is the same process as it was on your droidx

Once you root the TB can you get back to stock with an sbf file, like the X? And are there sbf files available for doing that?

Yes, you can get back to stock by flashing the stock RUU. There's instructions stickied on xda. I believe Scotty85 has a "Root Thread" with different methods and the RUU somewhere in the All Things Root section

edit: here's Scotty's thread, the link to return to stock is in the 1st post after the videos

It's probably unlikely. You have to load an older software version that's rootable, uninstall it and then add the current software. It's too much work to fit into a legitimate one click root.

Sounds complex to root this thing

Get time, will give it a shot.

Was really hoping for one click root...have macs at home and work pc blocks a lot of the files.needed to root so i am kind of stuck...
