Hia, not sure how any of this really works, but iv been seeing alot of stuf on rooting and basically want to know how it works. what advantages are there of rooting my phone, and the main question i was wanting to ask was, if i root my phone would i be able to upgrade my version of softwar, im 2.2 at the moment. i don't know what versions there are but some info would be great :) thanks x

read the stickies in the rooting section there is are guides that you will find all your answers and they put it in logical and bitesize chunks

read A LOT

Do you mean will you still be able to get upgrades from your carrier? If so, yes provided all you do is root it.

If you mean can you also install newer ROM's that people have customised, then again, yes you can but will need to manually update these.

No! Accepting an Over The Air update on a rooted phone is a really bad idea. We have seen way too many people get in a mess doing that.

It's in the root forum FAQs - read those before doing anything.

But it's a few minutes' work to update, and you will have far more updates available.

Provided you don't run a custom ROM then OTA updates aren't an issue. I know of many on the Desire that do exactly that. But thats just my experience.

However I do fully agree that if you are going to root then you are better off choosing a custom ROM of your choice (Cyanogen of Modaco for example) and keeping that up to date. They are better performing and better featured in most cases.

If you use something like Titanium backup then it is fairly painless to update and get back to where you were with apps etc.

Spend plenty of time reading up. Once you have the basics its all pretty straight forward.

Until you know why you want to root, what benefits you will get and which custom rom you want I would leave it as is.

There is talk of HTC doing a Gingerbread release in the next few months anyway.

Ota is an issue custom Rom or not. Please do not contradict the years of experience we have accumulated between us just because you know a few lucky people.

Rooting puts a custom recovery on your device. Ota updates are designed to work with and partly update factory flashed components.

Effects may not be immediately apparent but accepting ota updates once rooted are a big no no

nearly all people on this forum that have ota updated when rooted have borked their devices in more ways then one. it boots but wifi doesnt work, device has lost recovery but is still rooted, superuser no longer works, bootloops. list goes on

i really dont appreciate what you are saying here as its ill founded and has no evidence other than "i know people with desires".
there is factual evidence on this forum of people messing up their devices on rooted ota updates.

custom roms dont get ota (usually unless the rom maker forgets to remove it from an htc base)

have i even seen you in the root section? i think not

Seriously this has caused many people a lot of problems. Even if you do know someone lucky enough to get away with it, remember that the next update will have different content to the last, and so there is no guarantee that it will work next time.

I really, really would not recommend doing that.

can a just add, a dont know what ROM is or any of they little things lol
It's basically your phone's system software and applications. They can be slightly customized versions of the HTC software, android without Sense, or with the updated Sense from more recent phones, or with a different UI of their own. They usually have mods to increase storage, and typically speed tweaks and/or power saving features. Some have extra menu options. Basically they all add up to more options for setting your phone however suits you.

But you should read up first - sticky posts and FAQs in the root forum. Always know what you are doing and why before doing it. People here will help if you get into trouble, but it's better not to get into trouble in the first place. :)

Samantha, SUroot, Rastaman and Hadron know what they are talking about. They are the ones we all turn too when we have problems with our phones. You will find they are more than willing to help [as others are too] so don't be afraid to ask questions but do listen to them and follow what they say. Rooting, S-Off, partitioning sdcard etc all baffled me but through their help and patience [mainly SUroot] I have managed it. Before you decide which ROM you want think about why you want to root and read up on all the various ROMs you are interested in.
