Rooting walkthrough?

[APP] z4root - xda-developers

1. Put it on the root of your SD card.
2. Click it and install.
3. Run it and click permanent root.
4. It will then patch and reboot.
5. To check if it worked, you can open up superuser or z4root again and it will tell you.

I have done this on 4 phones with success.

Also if you are thinking about doing more than just root, like create a custom recovery and flash a ROM, check here:

While z4root is easy, you miss out on the learning experience of going through the process manually. It's very helpful if you plan on doing more with your rooted device. Android central (referenced above) has a great step by step walkthrough as well. It's in the same directory linked to above.

Really appreciate it. I plan on doing it myself without z4.... but just in case I discover that I'm an idiot, any idea where I can find it? I've tried doing a Google search but with no luck.... which in itself may prove my idiocy.

I have a question what is the point of setting up the recovery? what does that do for you? and where is the link to download it? (is it [APP] z4root - xda-developers) cause that not working.....

Look at the second link I posted above.

I just rooted my phone today and installed ThundeROM. Simply amazing. The performance boost (not that this little phone really needs it) is phenomenal. It's absolutely stunning. I have been an Android user for a year and a half (this is my second Android phone), and I never thought I wanted to go through the hassle of rooting. But it's well worth it.

after rooting with zroot, is it simple to install the thunder rom?

Yes but there are steps and instructions to follow (linked in the ThundeROM thread). Please read those and follow carefully each step. Otherwise, it will not work.

Yes it is. Please do not skip any steps. I know it's tedious and confusing, but I think it helps if you just don't think about it and follow the steps. If you think about it, things get complicated. If just follow the steps to the t, it works.

Right, I've got that. When I ran it I discovered that there are two options, Temporary and Permanent so that answered my question :) Thanks!

Well, I have successfully rooted and created my custom recovery and NAND backup for my Optimus :D Trying to decide on a ROM. So far I'm leaning toward ThundeROM based on things I've been reading in the forums. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

ThundeROM is a great choice to start. nROM is also quite good. The devs of both ROMs collaborated and just came out with Lego ROM. You really can't go wrong with any of them. It boils down to personal preference.

I notice you have Lego. Are you liking it better than ThundeROM? If so, why? Basically I want to get rid of some of the bloat and do a lot of customization. Eventually some development. I've worked with Java and C++ and coadministered a Sunbox. I finally decided to take the plunge and root my Optimus after a friend of mine rooted his EVO and it blew me away. I"m starting with the Optimus and may do the EVO as well. Lol, ok, I probably will. ;) Thanks!

If you're a customization junkie then Lego ROM is likely for you. From themes to kernels and buildprops, it's pretty much a one-stop ROM customization shop. Like I said before it boils down to preference. Try them out and see which one gets your geek meter twitching.

**All future updates to this information will be posted in this thread.

So I thought I'd put the Optimus S rooting links all in one place for simplicity's sake. As many of you know, the devs at AC are putting out some pretty cool stuff for our free upgrade (or mostly free ;)) smart phone.

Went with ThundeROM...absolutely amazing. 135 mb internal storageand customization possibilities out the wazoo. Thanks for all your help and to the devs. Geek meter in red zone :D
