I have been looking into rooting my Inspire 4G for a while now. The main reason I want to do it is to remove the bloatware that ATT installed on it. I don't want to change to any custom ROMs (right now). I would like to use Titanium Backup's features to automate backups of the phone. Will I be able to keep apps and their data through the rooting process? Also, will root access allow me to make changes that may improve battery life or data speeds? I would appreciate any help on this matter.

You will not be able to keep apps during the root process. Part of the rooting process is downgrading radio/rom so you will loose everything. Infact once your do rooting you'll be on an old DHD (Desire HD) rom so you'll atleast have to re-flash back to a rooted stock rom.
Having root access will allow you to do what your heart contends.

Most of mine did it on their own when gmail synced. I'm using Cyanogen Mod 7.1RC1 and my battery is 40-50% better. And it has so many more options for configuring it how I want it. But there are others that are stock sense that have taken the bloatware out...I can't remember off the top of my head. Just check out the ROM's thread.
