Root Rooting?

So, ultimately what is the advantages of rooting and what have you found to be a much better candidate than the "Sprint/Original rom"?

I've been an avid iPhone user where jailbreaking was a huge advantage, now stepping into Android I'm curious as to whether rooting is really worth it and what it will take.

First, welcome to the forums!

Second, Rooting is definitely worth it. Free wifi tether makes it worth it by itself. Customization, themes, CPU control, different roms and kernels all are added bonuses. I work with someone with a "jailbroken" Iphone 4.....from what I have seen, android customization is miles ahead of what you can do with an Iphone. With Apps2sd you can do almost the same thing you can with an Iphone as far as the amount of apps and media you can use. Different launchers give you the option to change your dock on the bottom.

I started with a Sprint Hero, rooted it, upgraded to an Evo, rooted the day I bought it......just upgraded my wife to an Evo....rooted and running custom rom and kernel the day she got it. Never looked back.

As far as roms, you need to look around and try them out. There are so many options, it is personal preference as to what you like and don't like. The Rooting for Dummies thread explains flashing and has a link to a list of roms available. Any questions, there are many here that are will to answer them and help out if you run into trouble.

this you can do without root. though you probably can't get the stock android launcher. but any of the launchers from the market will let you do this without root.

like it was said before the 2 biggest (popular) things you can do with root is get free wifi hotspot and remove any unwanted apps from sprint.

many and most roms have the sprintware removed, but you can install any you want back.

there are also lots of hacks out there that can be done, though I don't remember them all. one example would be upping the mb limit on text messages. these are usually included with the rom you choose. here is the link to xda, click on a few and read the change logs to get an idea of what's out there. sense based roms are going to run similar to stock and the best place to start after just rooted. the biggest thing for me on root is choice. choice of rom and style for my phone. many roms have built in themes or themes as an add on. this includes different icons in the top task bar to different colored menu buttons and such.

also slimmed down roms with extra languages and stuff removed.

Rooting allows you to take full control of your evo. You'll be able to download custom roms and kernels. Youll be able to theme. Under/overclock your CPU for performance and battery gains. You can fully customize your evo. Welcome to the forums.

I first did it for better battery life, now its an obsession with flashing roms and kernels . I can't believe I went one month before I dared to root .

The guide over on XDA explains alot of what you can do and so does looking through their ROM section. I rooted mainly for Wi-Fi tether as well as battery life improvement. My signal is bad at work and I obviously can't change that so ROM's tend to help. My personal favorite on XDA is Myn and his ROM's. He is constantly making them better and faster. The reason I like them so much is because they are stock sense ROM's. I'm not a big fan of stock Android (Or I would have gotten the Epic) so this really appealed to me. He even released a new one with the NEW Sense when, in reality, they're not gonna bring that to the EVO. XDA is the best man, please keep us posted
