Root Rooting

Anyway someone can give me instructions on the easiest to root my TB, ive tried the one click and the ADB but seemes to have errors whatever i do. I would love just a quick step by step of how you did it.Thanks

The ADB method works if you follow the instructions. If you are getting errors, it's likely because you don't have ADB set-up properly. I would suggest you Google search for instructions on setting up ADB to make sure your install and PATHS are correct.

I had an issue with step 4 when you Choose the bootloader option and press power; let the ROM flash. When asked to upgrade, choose yes. I does not ask me to upgrade is there a reason why? And one more thing does it matter if the 3 downloaded files are in winrar files or do they have to be zip files?

its really easy doing it this way.

first do this
[Prerequisite to Rooting] Android SDK Installer - v3.0 for Windows - xda-developers

download the files from here (step 1)
[ROOT] Unlock Bootloader + Permroot 3/19/2011 - xda-developers

then this
[SCRIPT] Windows One Click Root Method [3/26/11] - xda-developers

you might have to toggle the "debugging" at some steps but i was done in 20 minutes using this

Matt,

After you do this root do you have to flash a new rom also? What does a new rom give you?

i answered the above on this thread: http://androidforums.com/thunderbolt-all-things-root/308585-root-question-issue.html but thot id bring the answers over for folks that later find this thread in a search

if you are using the same directions,it looks like all the downloads should be .zip files. the middle file contains several smaller files that will be used during the install. there will be a disc image,a .nb0 file,a text file, and a couple that are just labled "file". the first file is a downgrade RUU that you wont be able to open without something like 7-zip. the third is a custom RUU that is basically rooted current firmware. you will NOT open or modify either of the RUU files.

see post #3 for reasons why your phone wont find the PB05IMG file. :)

in order for hboot to to find the file, you must have a FAT32 formatted sd card, and it must be named EXACTLY "PG05IMG.zip"

look at the PG05IMG file on the phone using astro file manager(from the market) and see what it is named. if you are using a windows machine and typed in the ".zip" then prolly your prollem is that the file is actually named on the phone "PG05IMG.zip.zip" as windows will add the .zip for you, automagically :D

as its reading the file, youll see a blue progress bar as it discovers and reads the file, then a yellow progress bar as it checks it(if i remember correctly). it takes a looooong time,so as long as your seeing the status bars, hang in there and be patient... its working :)

May I ask you a question, Randy? Why do you want to root? I'm just curious because if you don't know what a custom ROM will provide it seems like you don't really know much about rooting. I'm not trying to be a jerk and please don't take offense to this! I just feel that most people think rooting is a must, when in reality it's a luxury and definitely not for everyone. Your phone is still badass without rooting it. Just my $.02

I totally agree with you on this Worm. I had no idea what rooting was, did a lot of reading about it and also have a really good friend that provides me with help and info about all the mods that can be made.

i agree with this also. stock phone fits the needs of many perfectly, espeically as phone hardware and the android OS gets better. those that started with a droid eris are familiar with the NEED to root to have a functional phone ;) but the eris and t bolt are apples and oranges.

i got into rooting because i cant leave ANYTHING well enuff alone :D

I ran across this article:[url]http://lifehacker.com/#!5789465/the-always-up to date-guide-to-rooting-any-android-phone[/URL]
ctrl-F HTC Thunderbolt. Is the method posted accurate?

it is technically acurate, but its not nearly as "easy" as they make it out to be  i used the easy root method and had a few issues, and had to rerun each step a cuople of times.

there is another "Easy" option on xda:
[SCRIPT] Windows One Click Root Method [3/26/11] - xda-developers

i havent used it,however so i cant really comment on how easy it is. if i were to do it again,i would just do it the old skool ADB way. :)

Rooting will wipe my phone, correct? I guess the apps are backed up via the Android Market etc. so I assume it's not the painful to get my phone up and running again. Then once I'm rooted I can use Titanium Backup to just restore my phone if I flash new ROMs etc? I've done some research but I've been holding off to root when I have more free time in case it takes a whole afternoon before I have a usable phone again.

Yes, everything you said is correct except on some ROMs google won't automatically restore your apps. I know BAMF is one

Ah, is there a way to manually do so then? BAMF is probably the first ROM I'll try out since I'm really digging sense, but would like it debloated.

Yea, you can use Titanium once you're rooted. So root, make a nandroid backup in CWM then backup your apps with TiB

the first time youre restoring apps, you might find it easier to shoot them back to your phone via the online market. before you root,go to the onlinemarket, sign in with google, and then make sure all your apps are listed in the "my market account" section.

after youre rooted and ready to restore apps, you can go down the list on your pc and send them right to your phone :)

you still have to wait for them to all download, but its defiantely a lil easier than having to find each one again on your phones market.

Thanks for your reply WormDoes. I am investigating the possibility of rooting for primarily two reasons. One, I would like a little longer battery life and two, I would like the wireless hotspot feature to continue after May 15. I also wouldn't mind a faster GPS fix since I use it for navigation in the car. I have read some ROM's can do that for you. I'm not convinced rooting is the best thing for me because I don't understand it or what a custom ROM does yet. This is my first android and first smartphone. I am sort of in the information acquisition mode right now. I am interested in achieving the full potential of the phone and am happy with it so far.

Okay I just rooted my TB and im trying to rid of all this access BS (bloatware). I am fairly new to rooting but quite familiar with the androidOS. Can someone please give me a lil more guidance. Much appreciated...

there are a couple ways to get rid of bloatware:
1) use root explorer to go into system/app and physically delete the .apks that you dont want

2)use titanium backup to delete the stuff you dont want. this way is a lil better than the above as it has an option to freeze things(making them invisible to the OS) before deleting. this way you can run it a couple days to make sure deleting the item doesnt have a dractic affect on something else. if it doesnt, you can go back and permanetly delete,or if it does you can defrost it.

*note-always make a backup before using either method to modify your phone.

3)another very good option has been described by wormdoes... create a folder and move your unwanted apps into it. that way,you can easily restore the apps if you decide later that you want to accept an OTA update. im sure he will chime in sometime if you need more details on this method.

hope that helps :)
