RS vs BB aka sprint branded vs virgin branded - The Truth....

Well, I never heard your explanation. The guide is super easy. I did it in a matter of 30 minutes tops. As long as you fallow it step for step your fine. I'm always lurking in that thread and most of the problems are with things not sticking and people saying its not working when they just don't realize what's going on before jumping to conclusions and assuming it just simply didn't work. You didn't answer my question... What have you done? What are your pri, prl, radio listed as?

i have done everything possible to try fix this save for rooting.vm has done everything they can to try to fix this.their engineers are trying to find a fix that works for it as we speak.its no longer a problem for me since in 2 weeks i will join the others that gave up and switched carriers.

here are a few examples from that thread

Even after doing this I still get the radio error sometimes when 4G is turned on.

Unfortunately, I still have radio issues after going through all of these steps. Especially when using Wifi.

now there are more but im not going to go through the whole thread to find them.now if they just did it wrong how am i suppose to know im not psychic

now that whole thread is full of people having problems doing the fix so why would i risk doing it on a device i am going to be selling anyways.now explain to me why i should have to in the first place.i understand some people are willing to jump through hoops to get something they buy to work i am not.like i said i dealt with it because of wanting unlimited 4g.getting the error wasnt that big of a deal to me since i installed signal notification so i would know when i got the no service error and all i had to do was click pri update to get service back.now with the combination with how bad my 4g speeds are and that error it is no longer worth it to me.

But you see people that still are getting an error after this either:

A. Did something wrong

Or

B. Actually have an error. There may be an outage, they may not have good enough coverage. This fix only fixes the wrongful display of the error, it does not remove the chance of you not have good enough coverage to send a text.

Sp OP is trying to say he isn't making a blanket statement, but he said...

"there ARE software differences between them....."

Plus makes claims that the difference he sees is going to be present in every phone.

I am on a Sprint phone. I have not had a single issue. Updates have gone through fine, not a single text error... nothing. The signal meter bounces every now and then, but the only thing I see is short high-speed connections when it does it, otherwise the connection is fine.

What I don't get is that if people are so unhappy why they don't just switch? People are going through phone after phone, complaining about the overall service, saying they can't get high speeds or 4G... yet they are clawing at the walls to make it work.

If you want alternative service then buy a T-Mobile compatible phone, order a SIM card for $1, then use Walmart or the T-Mobile website to get on a $30 or more plan.

Boost, Metro PCS and a number of other carriers are also available if you don't like either VM or TM.

Not trying to tell anyone off, but VM is one of the cheapest services for a reason... they are not going to have the best of any service... coverage, customer service or devices. If you want the best then there are plenty of companies willing to take your $90+/month and put you on a contract.

thanks for the info its nice to know that fix would do absolutely nothing for me.i dont get a wrongful display of the error i have no phone or text period once my phone goes to -120 dbm.

as for me not having good enough coverage how many people can say they get this type of coverage at home.
Screenshot_2012-08-17-18-37-14.png

i can go from that to -120 by clicking my email, music, web, camera basically just doing anything on my phone.i also dont think my phone likes me because if i look at it funny it can happen.

who knows maybe me and a few other have a totally different error and thats why that fix dont work for everyone but to be honest i really dont care anymore.

oh i took that screencap last night when you said something about not being able to get the prl update because of the service in your area.

Post a screen shot of your prl, pri etc.

why not just scroll up to see what my pri prl is actaully i think i would rather post this.iguess my phone doesnt like me bragging about my coverage either.

how long should i let it stay at -120 for it to sink in it isnt just a simple timeout like others including leslie has claimed in her thread about the issue

been around 15 minutes so far but i want my phone back.for the record i had it happen at night and the next morning woke up still with the error
Screenshot_2012-08-18-14-04-26.png

I agree 100% its not a timeout. In no way does that explain crazy signal fluctuations, or the complete inability to call or text when it happens.

So basically your on the stock prl, pri, and radio. If you don't want to change them then your stuck with what you have. Fallow Leslie's guide and you won't be having that problem.;)

My phone was doing the same exact thing. Did the updates and no more problems.

thats funny the other expert said it wouldnt fix it since it only fixes timouts or something like that.
but here is something hilarious 5 minutes after fixing it it came back.i wish i would of thought of taking a cap after i fixed it.i might of set of record with how quick it came back.

grats on fixing it but like i said i wont risk it since im selling mine.i will direct whoever buys it to the thread to see if it helps them

oh i guess it does make sense to blame the consumer for not trying to fix the phone instead of the carrier that released it.

I never said that, the -120 is the radio, pri or something software related timing out. That is the exact problem it fixes.

ok, so i will post there here with the hopes to set some things straight about these phones....

i am now on my 6th evo v 4g. 3 have been from BB with virgin branding and 2 have been from RS with sprint branding.
grats? im still on my first...

all 6 of them have the mms/fluctuation signal issue. one phone was not better than the other, all of them suck

check all things root sticky.
all 6 have light leak around the bottom 1/4 of the glass
never noticed this issue.

all 3 virgin branded phones back piece does not fit properly, ie gaps around edges especially corners, power and volume buttons are either WAY to easy or WAY to hard to press to get to work.

get a laza extended battery...works wonders...back piece fits better and is easier to remove than the stock one.

all 3 sprint phones did NOT come with the factory installed screen protector, all 3 virgin phones DID come with factory installed screen protector

Its gorilla glass. i dont even use or need a screen protector.

all 3 sprint phones battery try "creeked" when squeezed, the battery seemed "smaller" than the virgin phones battery which set firmly in the battery tray.
even with my stock back/battery i did not have this issue

there ARE software differences between them.....

sprint phones would not update the PRL past 60007
virgin phones would update to 60008 right out of the box, and 1 even updated to 60009 (my first one)

no there is not thats a PRL and carrier specific. my sprint phone updated just fine to 60009 now im using the SPRINT prl off of the all things root sticky.

and this one is odd...

the stock browser on the virgin phones will not highlight the URL at the top when you click on it. you must click, hold, select all, then backspace or start typing. on the sprint phone, when you click on the URL the whole string is highlighted automagically so you can just start typing in the web address you want to visit.

its android if you dont like something change it, if no go become an iZombie.

i am returning my 6th one within the week unless an update is rolled out. i will be switching to the tmobile 4g prepay plans since i can actually get 4g with them at my home.

whats messed up is i live in a Minneapolis suburb and there is WiMax all over here, except on the west side of the cities and there is absolutely 0 coverage. which is where i happen to live and work.

this phone has such good potential but has been a huge letdown for me

Go return it then, no update will happen in a week, its an international corporate business, they don't make decisions that fast.

We wont miss you, you have 8 posts, and im sure nothing contributed, not even trying to be a dick here, just straightforward, it is android it is meant to be customized by the user. it is linux it is open source it is scalable changeable and moddable. if you do not like it get an iPhone, and go enjoy being spoonfed everything you want to "just work" in a walled garden, and if it doesnt have what you want, the next version will which will cost you more money.

Android is built to be modified, sometimes it just works other times you make it work, and when you make it work you make it work how YOU want.

Pretty helpful post, up until the last part, kinda harsh IMO. Also, the tired excuse of giving all these serious problems a pass by saying android is meant to be modded, is lame. Believe it or not, the vast majority of people who buy a cell phone, be it iPhone or android, spend good money and (gasp!) expect it to work. Not everyone has the time, patience, or skills to do such things. Saying things like "we won't miss you" or "buy an iPhone" is not helpful. I only have 60 posts though, is that even enough to have an opinion? ;)

well said but in this forum it will fall on deaf ears

Can we dial down the harsh personal comments?

How many posts someone has doesnt establish anything other than how many posts someone has, yeah?

Cheers, thanks on that. :)

And a PRL is just a text file listing towers, unless there's a tower change in your area, updating it isn't a really big change.

Remember - after updating your PRL, always update your profile. ;)

Your right it should work out of the box. A lot of us where frustrated and wanted to fix our phones because we paid good money for them. Everyone's entitled to there own thoughts and opinions except when their being rude. IMHO.;)

Not sure why you think no one is listening to you. I have heard what you said from the get go. I was trying to help you, by directing you to the fix thread, and you don't want to go that route. I can understand you feeling the way you do about rooting, and modding, and all that. This phone, should have worked out of the box. But, sense it doesn't, and your unhappy with the phone, why not try an fix it? I know your selling it because the problem, but what happens if say the next phone you get, has another problem? Then you will be in the same boat again. To me, these are learning experiences. They might, or might not help you in the future but, what if your next phone has something wrong with it? Company's are people, and make the same mistakes as other people. I wasn't happy with my HD2, I modded it. Same goes for most of my devices but that's why I use Android and use Linux. If I don't like it, I can change everything to my liking and fix any problems I have for the most part. That being said, I hope you can find the right phone for you, and one that works out of the box. My experiences in the past, have lead me to hack, mod, and do what ever I can to make my device I paid a pretty penny for work, and work the way I want. All phones have bugs at first, at least for the most part and are usually worked out in due time. Hope you find a good phone that works for you. Good luck.:)

Agreed sir. :D Cheers, to you!:p

phones arent perfect if they were then no body would be rooting or making custom ROMS :p, i dont mind if my phone has flaws on it, it'll give me something to work on during my free time, if someone wants a phone fully functional out of the box i would but an android that is known for stability or the iPhone.

that was more of a blanket statement not directed at anyone in general and when it comes down to it not just this forum.it just seems to me way to many people just accept when a phone is released with problems.just to make sure people dont read that the wrong way im not just talking about the evo.im sure the next phone i buy(lg motion) will have problems as well.yeah its great that there are devs out there that will fix the problems phones have when they launch.i just wish there wasnt problems in the first place.maybe thats asking to much but that is how i feel.

Understood, :p I am a huge, fan of LG. I own a lot of LG products, i.e. phones, televisions, washer/dryers etc. The LG Esteem had its problems at first. LG was good about releasing updates to the phone to fix the problems, that where occurring with the phone. Search LG Esteem problems. It had a problem where the phone would say, "updating do not unplug" but it wouldn't even be updating, or even plugged in. It also had reboot problems, and bad battery life. When I say it had bad battery, it was horrible. I owned the phone the day it was released. Came with ZVA firmware and went to ZVB, ZVC to ZVD which ZVD finally, totally fixed the problems the phone had. But The customer service they have is great, none the less. I didn't wait and rooted and all the good stuff, thanks to the dev community and was fixed the first month. Kinda like whats going on with this phone. Also the LG Connect had over heating problems when it was released, which I'm not sure if the problems where worked out, because I didn't own the phone, I just heard through the Esteem forums here on AF. Notice the trend here? ;) Either or its not just LG phones, its all phones as you can see in my signature I returned my Motorola Triumph cause it was over heating that and the LG Esteem came out lol. So with the exception of some newly released phones that don't have problems i.e. Nexus line, which I haven't fallowed and am not sure if they ever had problems, I'm just assuming it cause mostly all you hear is good about the Nexus line. Like I said good luck and I hope you find a device that works out of the box and suites your needs. I would stay away from newly released phone until you hear feedback from others. I would make sure and do plenty of research, so you don't have the same problems your having here. I know this phone was on Sprint for some time, and with the latest update to ICS for them and VM getting this as a new phone with ICS, these problems are almost expected and does suck for anyone going through that. I hope they get HTC and VM work this all out so you don't have to root and mod just to make their phone work the way you want and the way it should to begin with. Good luck! :)

thanks for the advice.the phone should be out by the end of the month and my current billing cycle doesnt end to sept 6 so that should give me some time to see how the phone is.the only other lg phone i had was a ov but i bought that around 4 months after it launched so i dont know if it had problems early on but i never had any problems with mine.metro doesnt have that great of a lineup imo so im hoping the lg motion doesnt have any major problems since thats the only phone im really interested in.

oh and the only other lg product i have is a ac and that works great.

Not sure how you feel about the Galaxy SIII, but its rumored and more then likely Metro will be getting that phone.

Going to be a lot of money though.

already know about the g3 but i could never justify paying that much for a phone.the light ray isnt for me and its over priced imo.im just going to have to get use to a small screen again until metro comes out with some better affordable phones or if i decide to go post paid with a local carrier next year.

I've had two sprint Evo V 4g's and they both had no problems updating to PRL 61009. I'm rooted though, and currently running PRL 60690
