Root rumrunner s-off for 3.17.651.4!!!!!!!!!!

ocnbrze

DON'T PANIC!!!!!!!!!
I've given this a shot and am an issue with it, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm on hboot 2.09, updated my phone with the latest OTA to 3.17. HTC Sync, as far as I can tell is uninstalled, phone is set to USB debug, and I have been switching back to disk drive with each reboot. I'm also htcdev unlocked. Rum runner keeps failing at test 2. it reboots, i switch to disk drive, the device is detected, then i get "[F*****************...**] Press ENTER to exit". I do have my a/v disabled and the firewall was turned off, as well. My phone is currently s-on and I dont have any custom recover installed. What do i need to check, or possibly could be doing wrong?

Thanks

as far as the htcdev route? yes, I did that.

Edit...apparently I must be on crack. I just booted into the bootloader and and its showing both unlocked and s-off. I'm not really sure when that happened. Oh well, I guess at this point I don't need to worry about it.

hi im new to the site, and to rooting. i just got a htc evo 4g lte from a friend im on Android 4.1.1 and Software Version 3.17.651.4. I've been trying to figure out how to root for the passed hour or so. I'm running a macbook pro, and it seems like thats whats making it so tough lol. Could you help me at all? It would be really apprecaited.

sorry but you will need to run this on linux or windows. it also says that virtual machines are not supported as well......not really sure on macs....never owned an apple product so i can't be of much help.

no worries, perhaps you have an old pc or something to use to root.....

i wish i did. my other laptop crapped out on me, and a friend actually gave me this macbook b/c she just got a newer macbook.. saved me money, but has caused me a headache with software lol.

Yes.

You can choose to just root with those instructions.

Or, you can go the whole way and get s-off with Rumrunner.

If you're up for a little more complicated process, s-off is the way to go.

im not really familiar with the difference.. ive only started doing research on rooting today. could you tell me the difference if you have some extra time? btw thank you for all the help it is appreciated :D

You want to start with my thread, how to get root on a Mac.

You're going to need to unlock your bootloader first, instructions are in that thread.

The steps to rooting this phone (any HTC are) -

1. Unlock bootloader using HTCdev.com

2. Install custom recovery (TWRP in our case)

3. Use TWRP to install SuperSU to get rooted, or just install a rooted rom.

Start with just installing SuperSU in your case.

However - even though your phone will be unlocked, you'll still have to fart around if you ever need to update your radio firmware or want to play with custom kernels.

That's because of something called encrypted signature security being turned on, aka s-on.

S-off means what you think - turn that off so no farting around later.

Rumrunner s-off tool can be run after the steps in that Mac thread, or before running step 3.

I'd run it after.

And I'd do it in stages.

I'd recommend doing the Mac root steps, followed by a full backup of everything, including your sd card.

Then do a trial run of booting Linux (probably want to go for that tomorrow at the soonest, you'll be busy lol), and after that's successful, s-off will go fairly quickly.

Don't be afraid to ask any questions as you go along.

We were all new at this once.

The individual steps may seem confusing when new to the terms and buzzwords.

I think you're going to do just fine, you crossed the biggest threshold - you asked first. :)
