Running 2.1 - update or not to update (2.2)

So heres the dilema im in,

im running on 2.1 currently, rooted, enabled third party apps. Very satisfied with the speed of my phone runs very fast with different home launchers etc.

Ive been reading around about phones being bricked on the update, losing your root. I feel like im getting alot out of my phone currently the way it is.

Why should i update to 2.2? cause of the flash player?

dont need it youporn.com works great and thats all the video of any form that i use on my phone

dont need GPS which i read is faster.

A fellow board member says eventually most apps will probably convert to 2.2 anyway

Am i the only one on this boat right now?

Rooting my phone with the update.zip file and enabling the third party apps was just so easy that i dont want to have to go through hoops trying to re root my phone again..not too tech savy so for what im working with right now, my phone is truly awesome...

now if i do decide to update to 2.2 what can i use to root my phone again? super one click 1.7? is that like unrevoked? where can i get super one click 1.7 file and does it act like the unrevoked program?

I would update to 2.2 the only reason not to would be if your planning on flashing a different rom.

you can easily get back to root and uncripple your phone with super one click I've used it with 2.2 and it works great. You can find it at xda-developers

If you have a product that you are happy with just the way it is . . . why change it? My Toyota was recalled for new floor mats - didn't need them and I haven't driven through any brick walls . . . I'm happy with the product the way it is.

Yeah - I have Froyo . . . it came on the new replacement phone AT&T sent me. And I also like THAT just the way it is. :)

I agree with gary1949. If the phone is working well for you, do not upgrade just to have the upgrade. I followed that logic & have essentially rendered my HTC Desire unfit for anything other than "hobby" use. Just be aware that if you have hardware designed for 2.1, it may or may not work satisfactorily on 2.2, regardless of what the fanboys here say.

I just contacted my cell company about possibly rolling back & was told, "Well, for $200 and a contract extension, you can buy a Galaxy S..."

The hardware of the captivate was not designed for 2.1, and there is not a single person who have updated to 2.2 and done a factory reset that have not been happy about it that i have seen.

But if you are happy at 2.1 and dont think you will use any of the 2.2 features, then stay there

I'd suggest you browse the thread "Just Downloaded FROYO 2.2 via Kies Mini" for quite a few people that are not happy after downloading 2.2 or attempting to download 2.2. As an example, read post #137 from BabyBlueJeff. It doesn't sound he was very happy with his updating experience.

Updating isn't without some risk. It can be easy, it can give you a hassle, or it can go all the way to bricking your phone, although this is exceptionally rare. So if you seek no gain, why take the risk. :o

i did say update and do a factory reset, i doubt said person did a factory reset. and again on this new update, i havent heard of anyone who followed the directions and bricked their phone.

I haven't done a factory reset and so far so good. The only negative is the higher battery drain. But as others have discovered it seems to be tied to the use of wifi. It just seems to drain more. Otherwise all is okay.

Is it better than 2.1? Well, this is Android. No offense, but these updates don't really matter. Yes, Samsung didn't allow a true Google Android experience but the base OS isn't that much better. Too incremental for my taste. Not sure why it took Samsung so long to release this. Again, more incremental than a major departure from the 2.1. I say wait it out if any new features do not spin your wheels.

I have run both 2.1 & 2.2 on my Captivate. Based on your post I don't see a compelling significant reason for you to go to 2.2.

Both are excellent in their own right. I use my phone a lot and find that each of them are very stable & reliable. The one reason I'm going back to 2.1 is for it's superior battery run times.

Not sure why it took Samsung so long to release this.
Here's why. Politics, yes you read it right :)

Samsung had it ready months ago. In typical fashion the carriers each had two issues with it. One, they wanted their apps loaded which would mean four different versions. Two, the carriers are greedy and wanted to charge us for it. Samsung said no to that one. They know that charging the customers was wrong so all parties spent all this time to come to agreement they would offer it for free.

That's the key! My phone works A LOT better after the factory reset! I think some people though dread the factory reset as you lose all your apps and app data, unless you backed them up first.

These folks that don't want to upgrade because "it's fine the way it is" remind me of that TV commercial I saw the other day, where people are still walking around with those old Motorola bricks..still watching TV like the old boob tubes of the 50's, etc...

Bringing this back up.... similar dilemma. My phone is not rooted or anything fancy. Debating whether I want to try updating to 2.2 or not. Reading a lot of issues about battery life, signal strength, slow web pages, etc etc. Granted i'm not sure how many of those are factory reset (like i would do) or user error.

Is there really any compelling reason to update to 2.2? I basically use my phone as a phone (talk/text), surf the web when im bored (mostly truck and 4x4 forums), take pictures and to watch movies when im on travel.

So on one hand, im pretty happy with what I have and there aren't any notable issues with speed/functionality for what I use it for. On the other hand, usually an update means an actual "upgrade" in which you do get more functionality and [normally] more bugs are fixed. Hence, im torn.

Not to mention after doing a factory reset I'll have to setup all of my preferences, screens, etc (i know i know, so that'll take a whole 15 minutes ... no biggy)

Thoughts?

web pages may take longer because they are now loading flash video and ads, which can be turned off. this is a feature i use alot, for example i had class during a football game last season i wanted to watch, so i pulled up justin.tv and watched the game during class which i wouldnt have been able to do on 2.2

but if youre not having any problems and wouldnt use flash you could probably hold off and not update. it does fix some bugs, some wifi problems that some people experienced but not all. and it does increase performance with the jit compiler but again if youre fine with it the way it is then theres probably no reason to upgrade.

as for me i couldnt stand there being a newer version available and not having it, but im aware some people could care less about it

One reason you may want to upgrade to 2.2 is that is the only way you are going to get 2.3....

2.1 and 2.2 both have there pros and cons. Neither one is handily better than the other in my opinion. I'm on 2.2 though.
