You do not need to shut anything down just because it is showing to be "running." Android keeps many apps running deliberately. If you have a rogue app that is causing quick battery drain then you might need to kill it. If you have a serious battery life problem then you can get and use the system panel app to figure out which app is the culprit and kill it.

App that are running that I'm not using (maps, skype, visual VM, etc) I force stop. I know some apps like google talk need to run in order for gmail to work so don't start stopping everything. I stop things that shouldn't be running like I mentioned above.

When you do that, all you are doing is slowing down your phone and, potentially, causing problems. With Android 2.2 your phone will, for the most part, perform best for you if you will let it handle process management by itself. This is not Windows and/or blackberry, or even earlier versions of Android. I never, unless I find a roque app (which is fairly rare for me), kill anything and my phone runs great and gets super battery life to boot.

I downloaded qik, the video program. Took a video and the app never shut down. My battery life was TERRIBLE for a week till I uninstalled qik. I wish I knew how to get apps from running when I power on my phone. Skype being one of them, as it cannot be deleted and constantly runs and I never use it.

I have the same issues with apps running while I never use them. I use StumbleUpon, GMail, Angry Birds, Voice Memo and the Phone. I read and believe the "don't use TK's" threads but I still have ATK so I can see apps that are running (curiosity may yet kill this cat) and in case I need to do a battery pull.

I've never opened Skype but it's running currently (according to my ATK list) along with My Verizon Mobile (which I killed a minute ago).

Should I be worried that apps appear to open and stay open all by their selves? Themselves. Theirselves. I don't know what word to use. Hmmm...

I am guessing that I need to just chill and only close apps if they appear to be zapping my battery.

Correct. In Android, just because an app is loaded does not necessarily mean there is a problem in any way. The only time I really prefer that an app not load is if it is one that I don't use and don't plan to use, in which case I'm very liable to just uninstall it (which is one of the best reason to root..you can uninstall just about anything on the phone). I think many people tend to be just a little over-zealous with the app killing.

"rooting" (besides making my smile when I say it) does seem kinda "out of my league." Earlier in this thread it was said that rooting is quick and non-technical. Is this true? I suppose you recommend that I get my root on?

Do regular apps from the market suffer because of my root-edness or is the phone just as capable as before?

I know there are mad threads about root, rooting, rooters and other rootish things. Sorry if I'm asking you possibly redundant questions.
