Root RUU ROM freeze on overwrite

I Recently bought a semi-bricked desire on ebay with a corrupt os. Could not boot into recovery but able to initiate an ruu overwrite in hope of installing a fresh workable image. Tried a wwe froyo stock rom which was compatible with data on hboot screen. In fact in fastboot usb mode it allowed me to try several different roms (I thought one might be right!). Unfortunately it never gets past:

Erasing User Data
Sending...
Updating Signature...........

Is this the end of the road? Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. (Oh btw, I've got Android SDK tools installed but I do not know how to use it especially as the phone is S-ON.)
 
What does it say on the hboot screen? Any info might help.

The Gingerbread upgrade RUU is the one that's compatible with the largest number of network variants (I'm assuming it's a GSM handset).

Had an official link posted by jmcclue on Xda Developers. Tried installing the latest 2.3 RUU three times. Again same problem. Also on second attempt phone gave the scary 7 vibrates and my heart sunk after reading somewhere it could indicate a fried eMMc chip! Please assure me that this does not always mean the worst.

7 vibrates is never good TBH. If that happened on the second time, what happened on the third? And if you just reboot now (no RUU) do you get the 7 vibrates?

HBOOT info looks like it had a fairly up-to-date Froyo on it. No reason it shouldn't be compatible with the 2.3, though there were some countries where it didn't work. But you aren't getting CID errors, so I don't think it's that.

There is a trick for running an RUU from the sd card. You extract the ROM zip from the RUU package, rename it to "PB99IMG.zip" (exactly that, case-sensitive) and copy it to the root of the sd card. Boot into hboot and it should detect the update and ask whether you want to apply it. If it's not working over usb this might be worth trying.

You can find instructions for extracting the zip from the RUU in this thread. It's the 4th of the "Initial steps". I don't think you need to worry about Goldcards (if you were getting "cid errors" that would be what's needed).
