S III Battery use

nope, they are on, which they have to be.

currently its on 49% usage : 7hrs and 42min

how would u reset those stats? sorry big noob here

you can, and should, shut them off. this would explain the battery drain.

even if you want to leave them on for syncing purposes its better to leave your wifi on as 4G will kill your battery even if its doing nothing.

ah don't u give me that ! haha

seriously though...
Seriously, 50% in 8 hours does not sound like a "problem" like a runaway process or app. You might be able to do better with some changes in your settings or how you use it. But it's up to you if you want to get more out of it or if that's good enough.

they actually dont have to be and this would explain the battery drain.

ok, and the cell standby issue? mines on 28%, is this normal?

nothing to worry about. the thing thats gonna eat up your battery is your radios(wifi and 4G).

use 4g only when there isnt wifi available and only have wifi on when you need to do something that requires an internet connection.

fact is, batteries have not advanced far enough along to adequately handle the energy burden that 4G LTE chips put on it.

3G is also less than wifi, especially in areas with weak reception. Wifi on average should always be best, even if a person does the " *#0011# " trick to turn up the mW level of the wifi radio.

To test, compare streaming Netflix or other video sites with 3G compared to wifi. The difference is stunning in areas without great 3G reception. Wifi as far as battery efficiency is tops.

Added:

I do not remember the Razr being so different with 3G battery life, so could fit my results that the 3G radio is a little better than the GS3. Odd how the GS3 smokes the Razr for 4G, but weaker for 3G actual results. Sure, the 3G reception can show great dBm, but the results sometimes do no correlate with the GS3. Do not recall the issue with the Razr with 3G.

Depends what you were doing during that screen time.

Best bet is to install BBS if you haven't already. Then plug the phone into your charger then unplug it and let it sit untouched for at least an hour (the longer the better). After you let it sit for that time, follow the instructions at the link below to generate and decipher a dump file. Be sure the dump file is "Since unplugged". The link below explains everything.

[APP] [30 Jul - V1.9.1] BetterBatteryStats adds battery history back to Android - xda-developers

The first step is to find out what background processes are waking your phone up. The more screen time that is shown, the harder it is to nail down the problems.

SO. Couldn't figure out BBS. Did a factory reset. didn't install anything. Disabled all bloatware in application manager. turned off mobile data, connected to wifi, turned sync/gps off. automatic brightness. did a few phone calls, texted casually. played no games. took a few photos. went into task manager about every hour to end all tasks.

13 hours after a full charge I'm down to 4%. Screen time = 1 hour 34 minutes.

What say you now?

What did you have trouble with in BBS? Install or how to use it? Did you read the first thread at the link I provided that detailed how to generate a dump file?

I don't undersand though, I did a factory reset. Disabled all bloatware. And with everything off except for wifi, I only got 13 hours. that's with very low usage.

Clearly there isn't a rogue app that I installed that coud be causing a problem becuase I didn't install any

I have a feeling that I need to just swap out my phone.

As to your question, I didn't get a chance to go through the steps and create the dumpfile.

could be a FUBAR battery...

for instance...i currently have 85% battery...and have 1hr 9mins of screen time...so at my current usage rate im on pace for 6+ hours of screen time...

stock, rooted, wifi/gps on all the time, screen 100% brightness

I think you should, and maybe get an iPhone. :p

You might have a bad battery.

It is possible you have a defective battery or phone. One thing to note is depending on your carrier there are things running that cannot be killed or uninstalled without root. Without a dump file to look at all you can do is poke-and-hope which usually just creates more frustration.

New android user... just came from blackberry... and have had blackberry since the original pager sized unit.

Solely on Lte (wifi disabled), I got just over 8 hours on standby.
I had the phone screen on for about 30 minutes. So I'm really disappointed.

Download speeds are in the range of 28 Mb here in toronto. Which is awesome.

Today I have turned off lte completely and wifi. On hspa I have got 4.5 hours so far on standby. Much better. But am hoping for a solution to be able to leave lte as the default

an option I found that improved my battery life (not sure if a glitch) was setting wifi to "never" for "keep wifi on during sleep".

Also things that will greatly affect your battery is a low signal. Also, if you long press the middle button you will be able to shut down anything still open and running as well as clear your memory.

You may also have your social apps, email, etc checking for data a lot more than you need. I have mine set so all I do is hit SYNC when I want everything to update. I dont need it doing it while Im not looking at my phone. this helps my battery.

Try EASY BATTERY SAVER to see if it give you want you want. I try to keep my WIFI on to a minimum when I'm at home. WIFI drains my battery like crazy. Now I can go probably 24-26 hours between charges with about 2 hours of internet, a few short phone calls, a few text messages, 1 hour of games.

Can someone just tell me if this is life or not? Went to sleep at 12 with 88 percent battery. Woke up at 5 with 68 percent battery. Better Battery Stats show that the phone was in deep sleep for 4 hours and 38 min. WTF?

here's the best I've gotten

What does BBS say the phone was doing for the 22 minutes it wasn't in deep sleep? Does awake time match screen time? Is there one proccess that has most, if not all, of the 28 minutes?

Man I don't know about you guys but this phone has the BEST battery life of any android I've ever owned. Yesterday I was at work for 14 hours listening to pandora the entire day and still had like 10% left by the time I went to bed. This was on Verizon 4G too. Brought a charger just in case but didn't need it.

I wish I could tell you. I updated BBS this morning and ever since the app is completely broken. Just crashes everytime you start it up. Cheers.

I know it may be a dumb question but I have to ask.... did you reboot the phone to see if that fixes the crashing problem?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling?

BBS? Yes I have. If you read the latest comments their are other people complaining about the same thing so I know its not an isolated issue.

As far as Im concerned Ive pretty much tried everything besides ordering a new battery and giving that a test run. I dont see myself being able to do any one thing thats going to stretch my 8 hours to 24 like some of the people here.

Scratch what I said about bbs not working, I just downloaded it again and it seems to be fine.

Im going to fully charge it before bed and let it run all night and see about posting a pic of whats going on with the phone.
