Root S off is here!

Houston, we have S-off!!!! :D

I just logged on to post this Scotty, and you beat me to the punch. :p

It's been confirmed working on the Sprint variant as well.

I knew it! S-off loaded and ready the instant my M8 is delivered. :D

i know,im pretty excited as well :cool: ive got a longer wait tho... my version is "available" on the 11th.

dont know yet if that means i can go into a store and buy it,or if i can pre order before that... im starting to get antsy.

need to get hoppin on some threads here :D

I saw you've been busy over at XDA. ;)

Post when you're ready, no rush my friend. :)

Bootloader "Tampered" status removal "Unlocked" and "Locked" flag toggling. Plus, removal of the Red developer text on the splash screen will be available really soon with S-off found.

/System write protection will no doubt be properly removed now too. Man am I excited to get this phone!!:D
 
I almost pulled the trigger today from VZW on the easy pay plan. Could have had it Wednesday. Don't know why I'm waiting except to do a bit more learning and give it one more day for an official CWMRecovery, lol.
 
The phone is awesome out of the box so can't imagine what new fun will come from full root. Teddy...worth the move. I came from the Galaxy Nexus and enjoyed it all the through 442. This is light years from that. Even Sense 6 is pretty good. Camera criticisms are overblown. Enjoy....

Just stopping by to say I'm officially S-Off. Feels good. Those 26 hours of no root and s-off were pretty uncomfortable! I'm looking forward to seeing the awesome development that will continue coming for this phone.

Next step is to donate to the geniuses that make this all possible.

Got mine late yesterday, and had too much to do. Hopefully I can find time to get this done today.

This thing is super fast now, it's gonna be insane once I get some baked good on here!

Curious, I did two backups on stock. One with each custom recovery (TWRP and CWM). In TWRP, i selected compression and the backup is 654Mb, where in CWM uncompressed is 4.7gb. Can compression do that much or do we think there is something hinky with the backup?
 
While I cannot reply from experience, from what I'm reading the TWRP recovery compression works fine. Restores fine as well. Especially the new one built from source. The thread I linked above has now been depreciated with a link to the latest.
 
Thanks Teddyearp, that was a good call on your part. The TWRP img download is labeled verizon_src.img so it wasn't exactly clear it was the TWRP img ... just went for it and flashed fine. Also, it fixed the write to ext_sd card so this is going to be my custom recovery for the near term. Good stuff.

Also noticed that 1.54 was out for the Sprint version, don't know what that means for the VZW crowd. Some mixed reviews, but it adds the extreme battery save mode. That could be useful down the line.

5 days without root, I feel a lot better now. :p

I'll tell you what, ADB can be a pain in the arse. I kept getting the dreaded "more than one device and emulator" error. Completely forgot about "adb kill-server" which got me rolling again. That and device not found. I just kept pulling the usb cable out and plugging it back in to get the commands entered through ADB. Once it went through, the bottles were chugged. I haz S-off.

Viper is running nicely btw. ;)

firewater went really fast,compared to rumrunner and moonshine. it was over before i even knew it,lol... chugged i think 3 bottles,then just "device is s off!" i looked at it,and thot "really?allready?" boot to bootloader and it was not lieing! :D

what OS do you use for adb? i still do some very basic stuff on windows,but for most things i use an older laptop on wich i installed ubuntu 12.04. since i got adb and fastboot working,ive had zero issues with it.

ive now done jpbear,moonshine,rumrunner and firewater and these tools seem to work soooo much better on linux.
 
All low level stuff, including adb and fastboot, works faster and smoother from Linux and Mac OS X (both of which are UNIX variants) than through Windows.

Windows has a whole layer of drivers and management layers for those drivers when hooking up anything to a hardware port. The headaches of getting usb drivers to work with various phone models and different versions of Windows (and sometimes even different Windows hardware) are legendary.

With any flavor of Unix, the user is expected to be smart enough to do the right things with the right hookups (example - you don't get your hand held, the idea is that you won't try to print a web page to your bootloader so no extra management software is required) and attachments from hardware to software are simple.

A lot of Windows users have no trouble and that's fine but it's not an opinion that the signal path from your user interface to the phone firmware is just far simpler with Unix.

For those interested, several of us can provide a primer on how to boot Linux temporarily from a cd you can make to work on s-off if you're having trouble with your Windows for that. (But count me out for the next day or two, sorry. After that, no problem.) You might even enjoy a virtual machine for that.

Absolute truth there EM.

I didn't boot into Ubuntu because I need to know how the Windows method will work. Most folks will go that route. :)

I now have a better understanding of the driver issues and complexities with Windows. :p

The big thing really was to keep the screen on. Once the screen timed out on the phone the connection was lost. I should have selected to keep the screen on in developer settings. :o

Also, welcome to the dark side Scotty! :D
