Root S-Off ?

it will also depend on what hboot you have as well. with the new hboot from the latest ota, the bootloader is now locked. but thanx to htc you can unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery and still be able to flash roms and kernels even though you will still have s-on. to get it fully s-off is more difficult.

if you have something other then hboot 2.18 then you will need to get s-off to gain root access.

so it will depend.

Thanks. Just sound like so much. I recently had a lg optimus and everything was so simple!

well sometimes it is good and sometimes it is not. it is good that htc has locked the bootloader down. this will prevent phones from being attacked maliciously or at least harder to do. it is bad as it can make life more difficult for the user to root the phone. the HTCdev method is not all that hard really.

what is your hboot? power off then press and hold power+vol down (make sure that fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot)

EVO 4g
s-on
unlocked
rom: MikG 3.00
baseband: 2.15.00.12.19
hboot 2.18.0001

So, with that being said, is there any reason to have s-off??

themes, radios, etc???

if so, can "unrevoked forever" simply be flashed to gain s-off?

s is your security. it helps basically to protect your phone so having s-on in someways is a good thing. and with the latest ota getting s-off is more difficulty. also a very good thing.

what htc has done however is provide us with a backdoor so to speak but still leave the security on. in order to do that you will need to get the bootloader unlocked by the HTCdev method.

once you have recovery you can pretty much do everything everybody else can do. if you are on stock though you will need to flash the su file then you will be good to go. otherwise you can flash any custom rom you want.

the only real reason that i see if you want s-off is so that you can easily unroot your phone leaving no watermarks for insurance purposes.

It depends on what you want to be able to do. Right now your H-BOOT is watermarked so Sprint will know you rooted your phone if you begin to have problems. If you use Captn Throwback's guide you can get your H-boot back to 2.10 and remove the watermark and gain full S-off status.

I rooted so I could hotspot my new tablet.

Out of warranty, don't care what Sprint knows. <grin>

Just want ability to tweak phone for max performance and battery life.

Am 4 days into MikG and with minimal use, battery went from 100% to 80% in 3 hours. I know this is a topic for another thread, but you asked what I wanted to do.

Just so I know, would I be able flash "unrevoked forever" in my current state or would I have to start from scratch if I found need for s-off?

Thanks.

no all you would need to do is follow the captains guide to update the misc partition so that you can downgrade your hboot to 2.10 then use unrevoked to finish the rooting process.
