Root s-on and want to flash roms? READ THIS

So what shall i do?

sounds like you have used htc dumblock at some point,and thus have twrp recovery installed inthe boot partition.

i would have thot that booting amon would have allowed the boot partition to be overwritten with the roms actual boot image,there are a couple possibilities i can speculate since that first link takes me to a non-existant thread:
1) the booting recovery method simply doesnt work on desire s. its worked on most devices ive personally tested,but there are a couple excpetions(desire hd and flyer that are known to me)

2)that the rom youve chosen is not set up for a recovery flash. i.e.,recovery does not automatically flash the boot partition

sounds like you will have to manually flash the boot image from fastboot,using the basic directions from the other guide. your rom will not boot without a kernel,so its gotta be in there somewhere ;)

just unzip a copy of the rom,and start looking in folders until you find it. :) you can then flash the rom,then flash the boot image as described in the installig manually thread.

Cool, that link works. When I get home this evening, I will download and look for the boot image. Also I will look at the rom thread a little closer :)
 
open up the rom download. inside there are folders... upen up the one that says "kernel" inside that one,openthe folder that says "saga",wich is the codename for your phone. inside,you will find your boot image :)

i looked at the thread,it doesnt mention any particular instalation instructions,but the revolutionary tool does support your phone on older hboots,so its prolly assumed that recovery can install the boot image.

since fastboot booting recovery did not overwrite your current boot iamge(twrp recovery) we will assume that for some reason this method just isnt working for saga.

to falsh your rom with s-on,take the boot image from the folder i described,and then use fastboot to flash it,after flashing the rom. hopefully that will get you up and running/

your phone is old enuff,it can prolly be downgraded to an hboot with wich you can run revolutionary to achieve s off. if you wish to flash roms,this would likely be alot easier for you in the long run.

So it's clear, I'm an idiot. thanks so so so much for this! I'll flash the rom after i get back from work. I know my phone is old enough, but when i tried to downgrade it, i got it all messed up and it wouldn't even reboot. everytime it opened up the bootloader. even when i hit recovery on the bootloader. Then again, if i want to try to downgrade it again, i'll try the forums you posted right there. I'll keep in touch with the instalation progress. Thanks again!

If you do decide to downgrade,it should be as simple as:
-flash a zip in recovery
-run an ruu
-run revolutionary

I'll look into the details :)
 
Firstly I'd like to say that after following the instructions the rom is working perfectly! So i give you my truthfully thanks. Secondly, related to S-OFF, i followed the steps on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31057015&postcount=108 but apparently that is much more complicated then what your method suggest (it implies downgrading with adb codes and relock, then unlock again). So you practically say only to flash a zip (but wich one?!), run the RUU i want for my phone, click on upgrade ROM and run revolutionary. Then I'm S-OFF. I will definitely your method, but first I've got to find the zip that has to be flashed :D
 
do you know your CID,and/or original build number?

some info on your phone would help me figure out what ruu you could downgrade to...

can you do this,and paste the output?
first download and install these drivers: revolutionary drivers (mirror)

then,download this small file:
mini-adb.zip

-unzip it,and place the unzipped folder onto the root of your C drive(not inside a folder)

-open a cmd window(with win 7,click start bubble,type "command" or "cmd" in hte search box)

-now change to your mini-adb directory(assuming you didnt chagne the name). type in the black cmd window that opened on your PC:
cd c:\mini-adb

-pull the battery in your phone for a few seconds. hold volume down,then power. hold them both until you see the white/colored writing hboot screen

-select "fastboot" from the hboot menu with the vol rocker/power button

-in your cmd window type:
fastboot devices

it should output your phones serial number. if so youre good to go. if not,youre apparently having a driver issue. i usually recomend these drivers from Revolutionary: modified htc drivers download and install the drivers(you should just have to run that file). afterwards,unplug your phone,plug it back in. make sure its in fastboot. as soon as you get a result from "fastboot devices" your ready to procede to the next step.

-in your cmd window,type(or copy/paste,is much easier):
fastboot getvar all

-copy the info that outputs here. right click in your cmd window,click mark,highlight it all in white. hit enter. paste the info here. it will help us know which ruu for you to run. :)

unfortunatley,getting s off will require a downgrade,wich will wipe everything. you can make a backup in recovery prior to downgrading. after s off,you will just install recovery,then restore your backup,and it will be like you never left :)

i havent forgotten about you,i downloaded a couple old ruus and im trying to see if one is better than the other to downgrade to :)
 
Take your time, i'm not a priority :D i'll wait paciently until you find yourself the time and will to find a RUU and all the other things that needs to be done :D So if i want to flash that kernel, i have to flash it before the ROM? that's what i've read on that thread.

a kernel just needs to be flashed for the rom to boot. it actually doesnt matter wether you flash it before,or after,you flash the rom,that is simply a matter of preference.

when i was s on,and had to manually install a boot image,i always did it this way:
-boot recovery
-make backup
-wipe,flash rom
-boot to fastboot
-flash boot image
-reboot

yeah well vipersaga rom works great but i read that with amidabuddha's kernel is even smoother, that's why i wanted to try it :D i'll flash it right now to see if it really does what they say it does. And I'll get S-OFF when you have time to finish the tutorial or instructions :D

to install a new kernel on a rom youre allready running,no need to reflash the rom. just boot to fastboot,and flash the new boot image :)

if you dont like it,just flash back the original,that you flashed when you installed the rom :)
 
It's done, i think it's smoother than the kernel from the rom. My device now has the best performances, even better than when i first got it hehe
 
Hey, thanks for the guide, it worked like a charm. I followed all of your guides except for the one on achieving s-off and used this guide to flash a rom (specifically Blackout ICS).

Everything was working fine, could receive phone calls, send texts, and use mobile network until today when I restarted my phone. After I restarted my phone, I cannot make calls, send texts, or use mobile network. Any advice?

In case you need to know I installed Blackout ICS by booting through this method into recovery and installing via zip. If it helps I'm using 4ext as a recovery.

Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a stupid question.

Edit: Hey nevermind, turns out the phone just took a while to decide to start working. Thanks for the guides regardless.
 
I have a htc sensation z710e and didn't realise about s-off so I have flashed my phone and now it hangs at the CM boot screen. Is there any thing I can do or is my phone dead?

I am able to get to the recovery screen by pressing power and vol down
 
Its not dead,you prolly just need the kernel.

You can boot the recovery as described here(make sure you use a sensation recovery!!) And reflash the Rom.

You could also install the boot image manually,using the directions linked in the first post.


I personally would just boot a recovery :)
 
Hi Scotty,

First of all thanks a lot for your time and your work.

I have a Sensation, and I have followed your directions and I have tried to install CM 9 from CWM. After install it, it hangs at the boot screen. So, I decided to wipe an recovery from CWM. I have tried to restore two recoveries but both fail. Both hang in the boot screen.

What can I be doing wrong?
 
are you booting your recovery as described here? (fastboot boot recoveryname.img )

if not,you need to manually install the boot image,as the permanent recovery cannot do it. if you are booting your recovery,it could be:

1)improper wipes. make sure to wipe
-cache
-dalvik cache
-data/factory reset

2)mismatching firmware. i assume youre on the newest firmware unless youve been unlocked and preventing OTAs for a long time. we can double check if you tell the info on your hboot screen,and link the rom youre trying to flash
