S2 battery life subsequent to JB update

Hi all,

A week ago my phone updated itself to JB from ICS. Now ICS used to pee me off cos it would regularly crash (maybe twice a day). However, the battery life was fantastic - just last week I was getting 4days between charges.

Now, last week the phone updated itself to JB. Afterwards I was getting lots of "out of memory" errors. So I resorted to performing a factory reset. This (as ever) deleted all my contacts and apps - even though the phone indicates that I had sync'd them with googlemail, it hadn't (the same happened when I upgraded to ICS so I'm half used to this crap feature).

After the reset, no crashes and no "out of memory" warnings. Great.

Battery life is still an issue though. I can now only go 8hours before I have to recharge! This is useless, I don't honestly think I can call this a mobile phone, I need to be constantly connected to the mains. All the settings are the same as I had with ICS, max screen and max cpu - I am not turning them down as I had them at max with ICS, I'd rather go back to ICS then turn these down. Or sell the phone and get a Nokia 3210. My phone is cool to touch all the time, not getting hot. I live in a poor signal area.

My google now is off.

Battery use is approx.:
Android OS - 50%
Mobile standby - 30%
Device Idle - 10%
diminishing etc etc

All I really use the phone for is calls and texting. Should I/can I go back to ICS or GB? Failing that, is there a fix for JB?

Many thanks,
Glen.

Sorry to hear about your battery issues on JB wurlyvalve. Although this is not unheard of during the upgrade to JB, as I go on to mention...

Did you also format your phone's Sd card and external SD card memory as per the Firmware update problems... what you can do! This, "vanilla", format is needed particularly if people have moved some app's to SD card as the file system in JB has changed and when an app is moved, part of it stays on the Phone memory and part is moved to the SD card. This can cause problems during the update and integration. See #1.2 of the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide.

That is odd and I would check your sync settings. You can back up your contacts to SD card and then to PC and also the same with your app's, as described in the above JB guide.

JB is regarded as being a lot more battery friendly than ICS by both modders and developers although some of the new features in JB, that you may not use, can cause extra battery drain, such as, Samsung Apps syncing, Smart stay, Google Now and some location settings, see the Battery Saving - Dummies Guide thread.

Both your Android OS at 50% and Mobile standby at 30% would indicate badly integrated app's that are constantly running in the background and a vanilla install should solve this. Alternatively, you could root your phone and install a stock based ROM such as NEAT ROM LITE that has all the bloatware removed.

Please, grab a coffee and have a read through the links that I have posted as I believe they will prove useful. If you still wish to revert back to ICS you can do so by flashing the stock ICS firmware with Odin for your CSC code as described in the first link. However, reverting back to ICS will require the previously mentioned vanilla install.

Thanks for the reply.

I will have a read through. I do not have an SD card. I have a lot of stuff on my internal memory. Unfortunately I can't back it up - I don't have a PC, I use my wife's old laptop with a very small HDD. So I'm very reluctant to format my memory. Is there any way around this? I have never, knowingly, installed an app onto SD memory. I don't have that many extra apps from stock.

Not really into rooting, just want a phone that I can make calls with - doesn't crash and lasts at least a day without recharging. Having a working phone is very important to me for my work.
No idea what Odin is.

Thanks,
Glen.

Helium, mentioned in the Firmware problems guide, allows you to back up to the cloud rather than a PC. See, here.

Just to tempt you... rooted phone on custom ROM and kernel...

According to Wavelock Detector, 1013 is taking 3m43s and android system is 34s. There is only about 5 other things listed and they are all sub 1s.

If that means anything to anyone? Not a clue myself!!!!

Cheers,
Glen.

PS, I know, on ICS I could go 4 - 5 days without a recharge! This has changed overnight with JB install :(

As per the end of the Firmware update problems... what you can do!...

As I said, this may seem a lot of hassle but the alternatives are:-

1. Put up with your phone the way that it is.

2. Take it to a Samsung Service Point and get them to re-flash it for you... in which case you will lose everything anyway.

3. Re-install your old firmware using Odin, which may not solve the problem anyway, and possibly lose everything.

The choice, as they say... is yours. ;)

This link fixed the wavelock issue! Fingers crossed battery life is better now....

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2669688/all

- Go into your phone settings -> accessibility
- Turn talkback on, select "settings" from the bottom of the page
- Switch off all the talkback checkboxes
- Then switch talkback off again

- Go back into phone settings -> application manager
- Choose the "all" tab
- Find google text to speech (tts), click on it and click "disable"
- Find samsung test to speech, click on disable

What is annoying is that I wasn't actively upgrading! As soon as I got home one day the phone hooked onto my wifi and "updated" itself :( This rendered the phone unusable.

Fingers crossed the 1013 fix has worked.

Right, the TTS disabling helped. My phone now lasts 8.75hours from full to flat. The highest battery drain is Android OS, that has gone up to over 60%!!!!

So, done a factory reset. Copied my SD memory to a work PC. Performed a USB format (which also erases). Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers,
Glen.

Having gone that far, you could have re-flashed your firmware as well in case you had a corrupt OTA download originally... just to be on the safe side.

I've had the same issue with my S2 since the JB update.

I've narrowed down the problem to my Wi-fi constantly downloading a small stream of data. Every couple of seconds the Wi-fi orange download arrow will light up. This keeps the wifi active and drains the battery very quickly. I've not had the chance to try the phone out on different Wi-fi networks to check if it is some sort of router setting that is causing the problem. However there are 5 Android devices in the house (4 on JB) and only my S2 is affected by this issue.

I rooted the phone and installed NEAT Lite but it didn't solve the issue. I'm going to try and see what other ROMs do with regards to this issue. It would seem to be the OS causing the problem and not a rogue app because I didn't install anything upon flashing NEAT Lite other than Titanium Backup which I used to freeze a couple of services that weren't essential.

Luckily, I've recently gotten my hands on an S4 which I'll be using in place of my S2 but I still want to fix this annoying issue.

Hi,

New record with JB!!!!! It can now go 11hours 5mins on a charge. Miles better. Nowhere near good enough though.

Aye, the wife has an S3 with JB and that is fine. My S2 on ICS would beat hers for battery life, but not anymore..... :(

Cheers,
Glen.

PS. At work my battery life is better than ever now! It only loses a few % during the day. The moment I get home from work the battery falls over and dies (100% - 0% in 11hours). At home I have wifi and no phone reception. At work I have no wifi but good phone reception.

Idicious, we are both on Tesco. Was your "upgrade" to JB done OTA like mine was? Is it possible for Tesco to have released a crap OTA package? Maybe I will try re-installing JB by wire like Ironass suggested.

Not an issue AFAIK with the firmware. Far more likely, with an OTA update, to be a corrupt download. See #1.2 of the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide, "Tips... on how to prevent update problems".

Maybe I will try re-installing JB by wire like Ironass suggested.

See #1.7 of the Jelly Bean update - Dummies Guide for step-by-step instructions and video for flashing the stock firmware for your CSC code. I would recommend a, "vanilla", install as per my link above.

So I've tried out CyanogenMod as well as trying to go back to the stock firmware for my S2 (full wipe and installed via Odin) but neither has solved the problem of the wi-fi constantly downloading small streams of data.

I'm now convinced that it's something to do with the S2 and the JB update that is causing this constant stream of data to be downloaded every few seconds as it doesn't happen with the other Android devices on the network. It's possibly just the interaction with the router in the household causing it but there are no settings to disable that I can find on either the phone or the router that alleviates this issue.

Since I've gotten the S4 I no longer have to directly deal with the problem but I'll have to set the S2 to disable wi-fi when the phone sleeps so that the battery doesn't drain from constant wi-fi activity for my mother who I'll be passing the phone onto. Hopefully a future update will sort the problem.

That's a bit disappointing to hear :(

I've just installed an aeroplane mode timer, will try that tonight to see if it improves the overnight battery usage.

I would agree this is a major problem.

The average consumer does not want to back up, sync, reformat and all that stuff...

You get a phone with 3 days battery. The system auto updates, and then the battery lasts 8 hours.

That is the long and short of it, and is frankly unacceptable. Of course my phone is out of warranty now, otherwise I would send it back in disgust.

Perhaps this a technique to encourage users to upgrade from S2, however as far as I am concerned it totally alienates my from Samsung.

Has anyone hard about a proper firmware update fix for this yet?

wcndave - EXACTLY my situation! Thanks for understanding. The thing is, I don't want to upgrade, the S3 and S4 are - in my opinion - too large for me to fit in my pocket. I wanted to remain with the S2 (the wife has an S3).

About to go on holiday, will perform the wired/Odin JB re-install when I get back. But I'm not very hopeful.

I too had the JB update, the install all seemed to go well. But after only a few days I noticed extreme battery drain, from a full charge and left untouched the battery went down to 10% within 11 hours.
I contacted T-Mobile support and told to take it to my local EE store, that was Saturday 1st June, so now I have to wait for the outcome.

Followed these instructions following JB update on Orange UK. Worked a treat, Battery life now approx 11hrs following full charge, was only 5hrs before the reset/reinstall. Top man Ironass!:smokingsomb:

Congratulations swoot! :congrats:

The full vanilla install solves most issues. If only more people could be bothered to do it! :(
