[S2] Clicking noises (unrelated to camera) make phone sluggish & decrease battery life

Hi everyone,

Ever since I got my Samsung S2, I noticed how, just before any camera-related app starts up, a brief clicking/popping noise is heard, apparently not from the speaker but from inside the phone (though I'm not 100% sure).

I didn't mind this until recently when I noticed that this noise is heard from the phone more and more often, even when I'm not starting any camera app, and even when the phone has the screen locked. I wouldn't even mind this so much, but it seems that if I happen to be using the phone at that moment, the phone becomes sluggsish, as if some CPU-intensive operation went on in the background.

One evening, after the phone went on a clicking frenzy for hours (one click every 10mins or so), I noticed that the battery went down to almost nothing, which makes sense when considering that whatever is causing this sound is making Android sluggish and thus using up lots of battery.

Has anyone noticed this on their phone and has any suggestions? Might there be a specific app that's causing this, or the operating system itself (I have JellyBean installed)? Thanks!

sounds like it could be a hardware issue.

It's quite random though, for instance it hasn't been doing that in the past week, so it must somehow be related to an app that is acting up from time to time, rather than a systematic hardware issue

I may have uninstalled some apps, yes, do you think this might be the cause of it?.. And I would of course prefer to avoid doing a factory reset if at all possible

It could, especially if it was an app that isn't very popular on the play store or downloaded from a third party website.
If you do a factory reset, then we might know whether if it's a software or hardware problem.

Which carrier variant of the S2 do you have? You could ask the respective subforum to see if anyone there has a solution.
Have you tried contracting samsung about the issue?

there is a click sound effect in Samsung models, and sometimes the UI gets temporarily frozen and if you interact trying to 'free it up' eventually it catches up with itself and all those clicks are heard from previous attempts, and sometimes makes things happen seemingly on their own. is your device a bit lower end? i have a Galaxy Precedent that has it happen quite often if in an app such as Play Music.

I haven't had that problem but as you said it seemed like there was a CPU intensive program somewhere you could easily seek the cause of it by installing a free program called SystemPanel Lite in the Google Play store which gives you advanced information in which programs on your system are causing these issue, or even more advancedby iinstalling Android Tuner and using the System Recorder utility to record all Android activity.
