Help S2 keeps rebooting

Mine's started doing the same since my ICS update. It's on my desk in front of me, so it's not knocking on anything (it last did it about 10 minutes ago). I keep getting lots of generic things (maps, mail etc) force closing since ICS & it seems to me like it force closes and then reboots as if it can't close the app and just resets. Last time was while using Spotify. Time before while using camera. Screen goes blank as if it's locked, but it doesn't respond to home button. Eventually, it'll flash up with the restart screen. Very frustrating.

Got woken up last night by my phone rebooting - a combination of the screen light and the splash screen sound woke me. It had been doing it in a loop for a while before I realised what was going on. Only switching it off completely sorted it.

I had it sitting there, unused (I was asleep) and on charge. It has certainly happened before, often when trying to use the internet - I cannot count the number of times that's crashed the handset. Several times before that, it just rebooted for no apparent reason.

I've only had the thing just over a month, and my HTC desire gave me no such problems over almost two years.

Gonna go back and read the other replies, but factory resetting will be awkward as I'm data limited and I don't wanna run up data charges downloading everything over again.

VERY unimpressed:mad:

I've had my SGS2 for a little over a year, and it also started to reboot on its own. The thing also is that when it turns back on my power button doesn't seem to want to work anymore. It doesn't turn the screen on or lock the phone. If the phone is off and i press it , it will want to turn the phone off. I took out the battery and left if out for 30 min. That seemed to work, for a short time. Then it cam back last night. I tried the battery again, but it didn't work. I'm going to try and reset factory and see what happens. If not, then back to BestBUY. Hey I'm paying for that insurance!

I guess the phone automatically rebooted twice in a row. I have heard that welcome sound two times in a row and when I took the phone out of my pocket I see this message that appears immediately when the phone starts up:

Starting Media Scan.
Media Scan completed.

Yes, there was also a big battery drop after the reboot.
I think it was 67% and it became 62%.

Automatic reboot happens for me after a firmware update with the likely cause being a clash of old and new firmware. It didn't happen after a few weeks of use.

As for the pocket, it might be because you accidentally press the power button when you squeeze it while in the pocket. Try leaving it on the table and see if it happens.

Cheers

I have a same issue since I have updated sgsII to ICS. My phone work fine without sd card. But with sd card it starts slowly and restart before I unlock the screen or restart after a few minutes. It restarts too If I want do something with sd card like open pictures, apps etc. I have 92 apps on sd card, but I cant move them to internal memory, because I have not enough time...==>reboot
(my battery also jumps from 40% to 20% after reboot)
Any idea what to do? I dont want to do factory reset or wipe sd card.

Thanks for response and sorry for my bad english.

Hi Russel,
I don't think I squeezed it.
It's the first time to happen yesterday.
I had it in my pocket last time and it didn't happen, however I haven't yet used the phone. It is still new I bought it 1 week ago, but still never used it. No Apps, No Updates or anything...

So what about this ICS update?
What is the benefit of the update?

Currently in Settings I see:
Android Version:
2.3.5

ICS or Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest Android OS meant to work on both phones and tablets. You don't have to upgrade. Just an option. The real issue is that sometimes there are problems after firmware updates due to clashes. Since ICS is such a big jump, clashes would be more likely I guess. That's why some advice to factory reset before update to ICS.

Android - Introducing Ice Cream Sandwich

As for whether you need to update. Its not really necessary. Up to you actually.

As for reboot, since you haven't done anything to the phone, the advice remains the same. Leave it on the table and see if it happens. Its pretty easy to press the power button while in the pocket. Had it happen a couple of times when it was in my pocket and I bend over. One other way is to get a case to protect the button. Then see if it ever resets again.

Cheers

No I put it on the table and it didn't reboot..

OK I will download these apps, can you check if one of them might cause automatically reboot after installing or damage the phone anyway?

- Battery - by MacroPinch
- Battery Widget - by Elvison
- Battery Widget - by Wiedenmann
- Battery Widget - by IkezamI
- Screen Off and Lock - by Katecca
- Shake To Charge Battery - by Life Mobile

I will download all of these from Google Play.

I left my phone rebooting every 2-5 minutes for 10 hours. When I woke up today I took off SD card and rebooted my phone. Now it seems like I have wiped TW, because my widgets are same like after ICS update. And many apps just doesnt work. So now I am ready and angry for Factory reset and wiping sd card....grr....f**k..

I don't have any idea why would the phone reset by itself!!!!
It is really sad!! because I put all my hope on Samsung!!!

Is Samsung the only phone that does this reboot?

What about Sony Xperia S does it reboot as well?
Sony Xperia S is too heavy compared with SGSII.
It weigh 144 gm.

I really don't want any other phone than Samsung Galaxy because it is terribly thin and not heavy like others, it is really light to hold with my hand, I don't even feel that I am holding anything in my hand :)

But I think any phone would have its faults/cons.
I even had my iPad while running some games, the game crashes with no reason. I even installed the game from iTunes itself!!!!

You cannot just wipe TW of the phone. A factory reset actually restores the phone to factory condition, which means no apps that you downloaded would be there, the interface would be as original and as you pointed out, widgets look the same after ICS update. If its not on ICS, it would look like GB with TW overlay.

Anyway, the fact that you mentioned after ICS updates tells me your problems were likely due to the update itself. Now that you have factory reset the phone, hopefully reboots wouldn't happen again. As for your settings, if you backed them up, you can restore them. Else, you would have to redo it. Apps would need to be downloaded again.

Reboots can be caused by many reasons. Incompatible apps, corrupted apps, too heavy usage (can be caused by lousy apps), temperature too high, microSD problem.... But the most common reason is it usually happens after a firmware update. That's because of clashes between the new firmware and remnants of the old firmware.

Updating to ICS would also have higher risk of incompatible apps....
So all in all, reboots happens because of what the user puts the phone through. In normal conditions and usage, I don't think reboot is all that common.

Hi all
It's taken several attempts to get this info as the phone constantly reboots itself - it stays on for about 15-60 seconds at a time and is fully charged:

Model Number: GT-I9100
Android Version: 4.0.3
Baseband Version: I9100BULP6
Kernel Version: 3.015-I9100BULPC-CL332484dpi@DELL154 #3
Build Number: IML74K.BULPC

Phone was bought on the release day on unbranded, unlocked firmware - no changes have been made.

Phone was upgraded via KIES to Icecream Sandwich when the update was available earlier this month.

Phone does not have an SD card.

Other issues I've spotted since this reboot saga started (last night - 21st May 2012) approximately 10hrs ago:

  • When the phone boots up, Wifi which is enabled isn't running according to the home screen
  • When you tap the "applications" button, you get a rotating circle signifying a loading time
  • Phone/Battery seems to be running very hot
  • Reboots occur whether on mains, usb or nothing at all

Hopefully someone can help, else it means buying a new phone which I'm not in a position to do. :(

Thanks

Pull the battery out and leave it like that for 10-15mins, then replace and restart. If the issue persists then you could try a factory reset (instructions on how to do so without access to the UI are here), but this would wipe all user data and reset the handset configuration to an "out-of-the-box" state.

else it means buying a new phone which I'm not in a position to do. :(
If it turns out to be defective you should still be covered either by Samsung's warranty or the Sale Of Goods Act.

I'd done the battery trick and managed to back up the phone ready for a factory reset.

While it was doing the backup, I continued working my way through a load of posts on here and other forum. One suggestion was to uninstall the last app in case you find one that was causing the problem.

The last app was Angry Birds and the one before it Ice Age Village. Uninstalling Angry Birds didn't fix the problem, so I uninstalled the next one and low and behold, my phone hasn't rebooted itself yet.

I'll update this post if the phone doesn't reboot itself within the hour - which would be a miracle!

The phone is still running very hot though - so unsure what to make of that right now.

EDIT:
Phone hasn't reboot once so can only assume it was the last app to be installed causing the problem. Happy Days!! :)

I can confirm that the reboot has only ever happened when my phone is sitting on a flat surface, unused.

As anyone got any ideas why this is happening? I'm thoroughly fed up with it.

It's been "repaired" once already and still it happens.

There can be many causes. Apps that don't play nice, microSD card issue or they also occur after firmware updates. Try uninstalling a few of the apps that you installed before the problem.

If you recently updated and it happen after the firmware update, the only method so far (I've read) is to factory reset the phone. You wouldn't lose the firmware, but you lose all your apps and settings. It resets and cleans the phone which hopefully resolves the issue of clashing firmware after updates.

Oops, thought I had replied here. Since taking the memory card out, I've had no mysterious reboot issues.

The card is nearly two years old and had been used in a HTC desire. Perhaps something lurking on there caused it. I suppose I don't really need one since the phone works without....and the internal memory is massive. For my usage anyway.

Anyone use a memory card with NO problems? I'm wondering if something else will go wrong with the handset down the road :(

I use SanDisk. I don't believe reboots of my phone are due to that as they only occurred after firmware update last time.

I had exactly this same problem with Galaxy s2. It was as if the battery was pulled out and then it restarted - sometimes the app icons would disappear on initial restart and I would have to restart again. I tried various methods of wedging the battery, removing external sd card, removing apps, etc. - Nothing worked. Took phone to Samsung Warranty store (Pattaya, Thailand) and a tech re-flashed the firmware (2.x.x - don't remember exactly which version). Worked for about a week with no restart but same restarting problem returned. Returned phone to Samsung and they replaced the circuit card inside and reinstalled the firmware (2.x.x). After a week the problem returned. Back to Samsung Store. This time they installed Android version 4.0.3 which I believe is the Ice creme sandwich version. Phone has worked flawless for a month. I believe this fixed it - I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I had the same problems after I updated to ICS.

When I tried wiping my sd card and putting it back in, twice i had the reboot trouble.

That's that then. No sd card for me for the time being

It never happened to me when the phone was new and with stock firmware.

Once I did the upgrade to 2.3.6 it would reboot at random, once or twice a day.

11 days ago I did the ICS upgrade, and the rebooting stopped completely.
Coming two weeks and not a single incident yet.

A suggestion would be to check the integrity of the SDCard using your desktop/laptop computer. The wipe function on mobile doesnt seem to do a integrity check, based on personal observation.

If the SDCard fails during an integrity check, it may explain the issue of your phone rebooting.
