Help S3 charges via USB but not recognised by PC

It sounds like some of you had to go through pretty extensive stuff to get this to work. I had just recently updated the firmware on the S3 and suddenly the PC wasn't recognizing it anymore. I took out the battery, then the SIM card, left it out for about 30 secods, put it back together and the PC recognized it the moment I plugged the usb cable in.
About a minute down time. I'd suggest trying that first if you haven't already.

I was having the same issue as everyone here so I decided to join so that I could share how I got my phone to work.

My computer would charge the device, but the drivers would fail to install. After searching google and tweaking some things, this quick solution worked for me.

My Operating System is Windows 7

Go to the phone keypad Dial this code: *#7284# (It's a secret code samsung uses to access USB configurations)

Phone Util will load. PDA should be selected. Click Qualcomm USB Settings. Choose MTP + ADB. Then click ok. Now connect your phone to the computer via USB. My computer made the sound that a USB was connected and the drivers installed succesfully

PS it worked with Kies as well

You are a god! I've been trying to solve this for days, and this fixed the problem in 2 minutes!

Mine worked fine for a couple months then my PC stopped recognizing my S3 when plugged in yesterday. After searching around and trying the suggestions posted here and other sites I had no luck. I tried different USB cables too. I then called Verizon today about this problem, and the first thing they suggested was to power down and remove SIM card then reinstall card/battery and reboot phone. I did that and now it works fine. Maybe that will help someone else?

I should mention that this was the first time since purchasing the phone that I even took the battery cover off. The SIM and SD cards were installed by the salesman.

This worked for me. Thanks!

OK So, I had this problem too.
My phone was not detected as MTP by the computer.
My phone didn't detect that it was attached to a PC.
On my PC --It didn't work.
Another PC --It didn't work.
Even another PC --It didn't work.
Mac --It didn't work.
Tried all sorts of things written on many websites. --It didn't work.
There was no MTP option in the status bar. It just always charged using the PC.
THEN... Finally 1 day, when I was looking at the back of my CPU (PC :p) I saw my USB 3.0 Ports (the Blue ones). I had never connected anything to them. So,
Tried on a USB 3.0 Port --It WORKED! :):D:)
My phone was immediately detected as MTP. The option showed up in the status bar. I could transfer files. But then- What about my USB 2.0 Ports?
Then I did the following :
Dialed *#7248# for the PhoneUtil options.
Under 'UART' tap MODEM. Under USB, PDA.
If this is already your setting, choose the another ones (PDA for UART and MODEM for USB) and then tap SAVE and RESET.
Again dial *#7248# for the PhoneUtil options.
Under 'UART' tap MODEM. Under USB, PDA. Finally tap SAVE and RESET.
Your phone will now be detected as MTP with all types of USB Ports now. :)

Original Samsung S3 cables stopped working. My previous Droid cables still work however. The 'non-working' Samsung cables work on an identical model of S3, so it is not the cable itself. But why does the older Droid cable work??

I had this same issue - out of the blue without warning my phone stopped being recognized and mounted by my Windoze laptop. I don't use a custom ROM, but my S3 is rooted. I don't use Kies, don't have it on my laptop.

I had a very simple solution:
1. Uninstall the Samsung driver (Control Panel/Programs and Features)
2. Make sure the phone is not connected
3. Download and install the latest Samsung driver (Download Center: Download Software, Firmware, Drivers & Manuals | Samsung)
4. Connect the phone

Be very careful when downloading a driver. This seems to be a favorite phishing hole for malware/adware. Only get it from Samsung, don't trust anybody else.

Had the same problem... but have a unique situation/solution.

I figure I'd post it to potentially help others.

I added a wireless charging "card" to my battery so I can charge my phone by putting it on a wireless charging pad.

Whelp.... that card, for whatever reason, prevent USB connection to the PC. Remove the card, connection works.

So now when I need to connect, I have to temporarily remove the wireless charging card.

Just removed SD card (unmounted it first) and plugged it back in, then rebooted the phone. After this connection worked. There seems to be no end to the ways this can be fixed...

I too had this problem with my S3... all I had to do was install KIES from the Samsung site onto my computer and my PC started recognizing it. It was weird because when I used to plug my phone into my USB port it would show up as the camera on my computer, even through my phones pull down notifications it would show it was NOT the camera but the MTP and still it showed as my camera on the PC... like I said, once I installed KIES via the Samsung site onto my computer, it worked flawlessly.

this just happened to me today after some win 7 updates i think tried all the above just doing kies again now, but never use kies before so doubious if that will help..

also the # code doesnt work on my s3

Hello, i was having the same problem with a galaxy s and galaxy s3 (device not recognised) (windows 7/8/8.1) so i got a galaxy s4 and i plugged it in and it installed some drivers for that phone and worked for that phone so then i plugged in the gs3 and it poped up right on the screen. it seems the older (mobile) devices do not have the right drivers any more but the galaxy s4 does.

I was having the same problem how ever another guy at work with the same phone was not, so I knew it was my phone and nothing else. I went to "settings" with the phone not connected to the USB then to "more" then to "USB utilities" then hit "Connect storage to PC" then it asks to connect USB and when I did auto play pop up 2 screens and I was there.
Your welcome.

Welcome to the forum. What provider to you have? I have Verizon and don't have those options. Getting to "System Settings" and then "More settings" isn't a problem, but once there... there's no "USB utilities" option.

Ive tried all the suggestions on here for my galaxy s3 running on jellybean 4.1.2 and no luck mine still does not connect.
it charges when its connected but still not recognised by pc and no usb options appear on the pulldown bar.

I tried doing the *#7284# and it takes me to a screen where I have the option of selecting UART pda or mode and usb pda or modem and then save and reset as the screenshot I have attatched but not QUALCOMM usb options whatsoever.

FIXED!!!! (sort of)
Been around every age and every 'fix' for past few days and FINALLY got what the problem is. The connection port at the bottom. I tried slowly pushingin the lead, then bending it up/down and slightly angled and BINGO..it connected. so the tiny pins inside the phone are to blame. now i can plug in and slightly angle it to pull it off at an angle and its connected.
Now ive got to figure out why it wont connect to the carrier. Super annoying.
but if youve exhausted all the ' not recognised' so call fixes i bet its your connecter 99.9% sure.

Hey everyone,

Had this problem for months now but only just getting round to seeking help for the problem. I have an S3 and i remember it working fine at first being connected to my PC and the drivers installed on their own and it allowed me to transfer files between the two simply connected via USB. However one day this stopped happening and my computer does not recognise my S3 at all, i've uninstalled and installed USB drivers multiple times along with KIES with no luck at all.

Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?
Thanks

Had same problem with my S3. Was working fine for months. Switching cables, USB ports on PC, Updating drivers, Updating KIES, Powering down phone, etc. ALL did NOT work to have my phone connect to my PC via USB to download and upload music, pictures, etc. When connected to PC was charging BUT no connection as a Media Device or Media Device (MTP).

Followed advice here. Unplugged USB cable, Powered down phone. Removed battery and removed SIM card and re-inserted SIM card and battery. Powered on phone, replugged via USB into PC and worked FINE: Showed "connected as a Media Device" went into down drop box (touch here for other USB options) and clicked on Media Device (MTP). Don't know why this reset phone to communicate BUT it did! Cool
